What’s been going on in P2/1 this week?

It has been another very busy (and exciting) week!

On Monday we were learning about the ‘n’ sound.  We learned that it is a dark blue sound because we make it with our tongues and it is a loud sound.  We were also working on our numeracy skills from 0-10 through lots of counting, sand writing, number matching and much more. We learned about the season of Autumn and spoke about the changes we can see in our environment.  We painted Autumn pictures using our hands and fingers.

On Tuesday it was our turn to take part in the sponsored cycle around the playground.  Some of us were quite nervous about it but by the end of our time slot we were having a great time.  Mrs Mackie was very proud of us all for trying so hard.  Mrs Walker even had a shot of cycling around the playground but was so fast that we never managed to take a photograph of her!

On Wednesday Sean Batty visited our school.  We were very excited about seeing him.  He was delighted with the amount of money that Murrayfield had raised to help the STV Children’s appeal.

Today (Thursday), we talked about who we help, whether it was our family, our friends or even our pets and then wrote stories about helping.   We made soup for our ‘Souper Friday’ event tomorrow.  We chopped up carrots, leeks, onions and potatoes to make potato & leek soup and carrot and coriander soup.  The smell followed us all the way back to our classroom…it smelled delicious and we hope it tastes just as good!

‘Souper’ Friday!

P2/1 are hosting the ‘Biscuits and Blether’ session this Friday (6th October) although it will be renamed ‘Souper Friday’ instead as they will be making soup for you! We hope that you will be able to come along and taste some of their delicious soup!  It starts at 10am straight after assembly.

p7/6 News

Good Afternoon Parents and Carers,

We had a busy week in class last week filled with lots of literacy, numeracy and topic, including creating 3D planets out of paper mache which worked a treat. Our class display is really coming on now and will hopefully be looking smashing for Parents Night.

In Numeracy I introduced the class to CPA-concrete, pictorial and abstract maths. This concept allows everyone to use different strategies to support their numeracy through physical items, pictures or numbers. It took a little while for the children to grasp the idea but once they got into it they really enjoyed it. These strategies are now on display on the Number Talks wall in class.

Congratulations to Zac Wilson and Lewis Dickie for receiving Head Teacher awards for fantastic vocabulary within their personal writing last week-keep up the great work.

P5/4 – Farm to Fork

Last week Primary 5/4 were learning about their topic Farm to Fork.

They tried some cucumber that Freya had brought into the class from her Granddad’s allotment.

Some of the children had a chance to peel some of the cucumber and we all got to try some and thought it was very yummy!

We also learned about the life cycle of a chick and used our fingers to paint the life cycle.

Over the next few weeks we will continue with our topic Farm to Fork and have an exciting trip to Tesco planned.

Breakfast Club – Rise and Shine

Good morning Blackburn!

We don’t let the grass grow under our feet in the mornings here at Murrayfield.  Children love joining in with our Wednesday “Wake up, Shake up” classes because they are great fun.  Why don’t you come along to Breakfast Club and join in the fun if you are in P1 – P7? ( Sorry parents – if you are interested we can see if we can arrange a session for you to join in too!)

Breakfast club gets us off to a fantastic start every morning.  It’s free to all pupils and we love to welcome newcomers.  Doors open at 8.15am.

Bikeability

A huge thank you to everyone who has handed in donations and has returned all the forms that have been sent out!

Just a reminder for pupils to hand in their forms giving permission for their picture to be taken by STV! If we don’t have them then they can’t be in any pictures on Wednesday 4th October when Sean Batty visits us.

P2 FAMILIES CONNECT OPPORTUNITY

Thank you to all the parents who came along to our ‘Families Connect’ coffee morning launch and for those of you who signed up for this programme.  We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday 28th September for our first workshop.  Raffle ticket winner to be announced tomorrow!

We still have spaces available on our eight-week programme which is designed to support children and their families to learn together and have fun through:

  • Exploring stories
  • Playing with numbers
  • Understanding feelings

Through a series of creative activities, techniques and games that parents and children can participate in together, the workshops will focus on three key area; language development, numeracy & maths and social & emotional development.

Activities will include:

  • Snack & Starter
  • Talk Topic
  • Reflection Time
  • The Science Bit (helping parents to understand how a particular topic will support a child’s learning)
  • Doing it Together (gives parents simple take away activities to try with their children at home.

We know that the home learning environment can have a huge impact on a child’s learning. As well as being the place that provides for the basic needs of a child, an effective home learning environment will encourage strong parent and child relationships that help build self-esteem and security and help every child to reach their full potential.

Building a home learning environment – and crucially, increasing parents’ skills and confidence to support their child’s learning, can have a huge impact on a child’s future.

These informal workshops will run for P2 parents on Thursday afternoons for 8 weeks from 2.00pm – 4.00pm and will focus on getting parents to reflect on what they already do to support their children’s learning, and inviting them to explore new activities, games and approaches that might enhance this.

We are really excited about starting our Families Connect workshops and can’t wait to see it rolled out in Murrayfield over the next year.  We look forward to working with as many of you as possible.

Remember there is still time to contact the school to sign up for this exciting opportunity!
