Primary 7 elect new Prime Minister!

Learning Intention:  We are learning to identify how an election works, including new associated vocabulary.

Success criteria:

  • I can run and organise an event with team members.
  • I can promote the beliefs and values of a political party.
  • I can use persuasive language and propaganda.
  • I can show my understanding of democracy through participation in a vote

As part of our learning in IDL, finalising from this term, we have been learning about democracy and how voting systems work.  We had a very successful visit to the Scottish Parliament where we could see politics in practice….listening to a live debate was very very interesting.

This week we asked all members of our class to present their individual manifestos and candidates who wished to run for Prime Minister, were put to our vote.

After the votes were counted and verified, NOAH AITKEN has this morning been announced as our class Prime Minister.  Well done to Noah for this achievement but also to all pupils who presented some very successful manifestos.

During reflection time, pupils described their experiences…

Charlie – “I was torn between two candidates – the one who was your friend and the one you thought would do a good job.”

Noah – “I was nervous because I didn’t know who to vote for.”

Keira – “It was a scary experience because you knew that one vote could change the whole thing.”

Greigor- “You were under pressure to choose between two people and make your decision.”

Reece- “It was nerve-wracking making that kind of decision.”

P5a Preparing for Disaster!

L.I. We are learning to prepare for an emergency

  • I understand the difference between needs and wants
  • I can create a visual of a disaster pack and explain why I have chosen specific items

As part of our IDL topic on Natural Disasters, we learned about Earthquake Preparedness and how this is taught to children and families who live in areas which experience frequent earthquakes, such as Japan and the West coast of America. After watching a couple of drills, P5 were very keen to try it out for themselves. We discussed the need for a designated marshal, whose job it is to organise everyone if there is no adult available. We learned about Drop, Cover and Hold which is a way of protecting ourselves from falling debris – after that, all we had to do was carry on with our morning and wait for the siren! It came as a big surprise to everyone but we managed to take cover quickly and then get to a safe place.

We have also been discussing the things we would include in a disaster pack – essential things we would take with us if we had to be evacuated. It was a difficult decision as we had to really think hard about the difference between needs and wants – we found that we would have to leave many of our favourite things behind and take only the things we really need to keep us warm, clean, fed and watered.

Hopefully we will never be involved in a natural disaster, but if we are we will be prepared!

P4b’s Pizza Party

As part of our ‘From Field to Fork’ IDL Context, this week, P4b visited Frankie and Benny’s Livingston Restaurant as we have been learning all about restaurants and how food as prepared. When we arrived we were given our own aprons and chef hats, which we could decorate. We were each given a piece of dough to stretch, twist and squeeze into any shape we liked and these were cooked by the Chef in the kitchen to create dough shapes, they were delicious!
After creating our dough sticks we began to make our pizza! We covered our pizza bases with tomato sauce, cheese and a various other toppings of our choice, it was so much fun!
We had an amazing time at Frankie and Benny’s and cant wait to go back!

Primary 6, 7/6 and 7 Alice success!

Myself, Miss Anderson and Mr Renshaw were so proud of our pupils following the success of our Alice the Musical Show.  To celebrate the hard work and dedication shown by all pupils, we held a movie premiere afternoon in class, sharing snacks and having a sing-along to our show, viewed through the West Lothian Council youtube channel.  It was lovely to see how all of the different teams of pupils, pulled together to pull off a great performance.

Have look below at some of our cast photos taken on the night time performance…

Fantastic job again boys and girls,

Mrs Ross, Miss Anderson and Mr Renshaw
