Maths week Scotland in P5A

Maths has been our main focus this week in P5a. We have been learning all about position and direction. At the start of the week we got out our Atlases during IDL, where we had to locate where the Rainforests were in the world. We used our knowledge about using a non-fiction book to help us locate this information in the Atlas. One of the children spoke about co-ordinates and was able to explain to the others what a co-ordinate was,  the other children were then challenged to find a main airport and provide the co-ordinate for it.

We then started to think about the language that we could use to give someone directions, what the children came up with was amazing, things such as; co-0rdinates, 360, 180 and 90 degrees, clockwise, anti-clockwise, full, 1/2 and 1/4 turn, left and right, backwards and forwards and the 8 compass points. We used our new language skills to write direction of how to get from one point of a map to another. We took our learning outside and we had to direct each other from different points in the playground using all the language that we had learned. We quickly learned that when blind folded we were unsure as to what direction N,E,S and W was and we had to change our language, we all had great fun.

We have also been learning how to ask good questions in maths. Miss Anderson and the children had to use their questioning skills to find out what the number was and the only answer could be yes or no. Some of the good questions that were asked were:

Is it an odd/even number?

Does it have 2/3/4 digits?

Is it a prime number?

Is it a multiple of?

The children were then given the opportunity to work with a partner and get them to ‘guess’ the number. This is a great game that can be played at home to improve questioning skills.

Coordinating Coordinates with P7/P6

Learning Intention
We have been learning to explore the use of coordinates to plot points, and describe positions and movements on a grid.

Success Criteria
I can use coordinates to locate a point on a grid I can use coordinates to describe and locate a unique point on a grid
I can make journeys on a grid, following instructions about the coordinates to visit.

This week is maths week and we’ve been working on coordinates.

In coordinates we’ve been identifying the coordinates of objects on a grid.We also made our own grids.We wrote down the coordinates of objects around and island. Then we applied these skills to create our our own graph and created our own island. We did negative and positive coordinates. We had to identify the coordinates in which the objects were placed on a grid and we swapped with a learning partner to find our coordinates. We had great fun doing this as a challenge.

Life in P5a

All of the children have got off to a great start over the past few weeks and have settled well into the routines of P5. We have been building our class community and getting to know each other a bit better. One of the first things that we had to do was decide on what theme we wanted for our class charter and we all decided on a ‘cinema’ theme, I think you will agree that it turned out fantastically, we then had to decide on what the most important children’s rights were that we wanted to respect within our classroom, not only did we discuss what ones were relevant within our classroom but we also spoke about what we could do within our class to respect these rights. We have all signed out class contract and can’t wait for a happy and successful year in P5a.

In our class we also have our ‘Class Shout Out Wall’ where if someone feels that somebody is doing a fabulous job or if someone has helped you, we can write a compliment on a post it and place it on someones ‘face’…….. It’s ok we got everyone to draw a self portrait for the wall so no-one will be coming home covered in post-its! The wall seems to be covered in post-its on a daily basis as we have such a great class where everyone is kind and helps each other.

We are all looking forward to the next year in P5a.

P6 Class Charter and Blogging

Primary 6 have been very busy over the last couple of weeks. We have spent a lot of time creating a class charter and we have also learned how to write a blog post. Here is Leah’s post all about our charter. Please comment to let us know what you think.

Over the year, various pupils from the class will have a chance to contribute to the P6 blog and keep you all updated on what we are learning.

 

P2 Class Charter

Primary 2 have been very busy over the last 2 weeks, working together to plan and create our Class Charter. We took part in lots of discussions with partners, and in small groups to share our ideas about what we wanted to include. We considered how we could include some aspects  of the Rights of A Child as well as our School Values. Finally, after enjoying one of the Elmer stories by David McKee, we decided on a theme to display our ideas.

Hopefully, as we continue our journey through Primary 2, our Charter will help us, and remind us how to work together to ensure our classroom is a safe, happy and productive place to be.

P7/6 Class Charter

This week in Primary 7/6 we have been extremely busy creating our Class Charter. We started by looking at The United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child and decided which ones were most important to us within the classroom. We selected four Rights which include:

Article 16
You have the right to privacy.

Article 28
You have the right to a good quality education.
You should be encouraged to go to school to
the highest level you can.

Article 29
Your education should help you use and develop
your talents and abilities. It should also help
you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment
and respect other people.

Article 31
You have the right to play and rest.

From our rights, we created a Class Charter to follow in the class. Some of our rules include:

We will listen the opinions of others and respect other people’s property.
We will take on our roles within the school seriously.
We will always try our best and celebrate our achievements.
We will be kind and support each other.

To demonstrate these rights, we created a freeze frame to show what our rules should look like. We had a lot of fun acting these out. We look forward to you coming into our classroom and seeing our Class Charter.

P4 Community Contract

Primary 4 have had an enjoyable start to the term building our class community. We have spent time over the first two weeks developing a class community contract to help ensure we have a fantastic start to P4. We looked at children’s rights from the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and picked out 4 that we thought related to life around the school. We used these rights and our school values to create a community contract with a Minion theme. Our contract states that:

We will try our best and encourage others.

We will help each other and work as a team.

We will keep our classroom and school tidy.

We will listen to and respect each other.

We will be kind, friendly and polite.

Using our Minions theme we have made a colourful and fun community contract!

 

P3 Community Contract

Primary 3 have had a fun first two weeks getting to know each other and building our class community. We have been demonstrating our team work and creative skills through a series of challenges, as well as showing off our maths, writing and digital abilities.

To help us to have an amazing year in Primary 3, we created a community contract. We discussed each of our school values and what they meant to us, thinking carefully about how we could show each of the values both in school and in the playground. We all designed our own emoji to add to our contract to make it colourful and eye catching in our classroom.
