Calderwood news!
Calderwood
As we were the winning house last term, we will be having another House Party! This will be on Friday 11th May, 9.30am until 10.30am.
We have decided we would like to have a Pyjama Party, so if you are in Calderwood House, please bring your pyjamas/onesies/slippers to change into that morning. We will be playing games and having fun (and food!) in the Hall. We will come round classes and remind you nearer the time. Thank you 🙂

and James – Vice Captain
Snow Snow Snow
Good morning everyone,
Here we are all stuck at home and wondering what we can do!
I do not imagine that is the situation at all and you are already very busy. However, boys and girls you could catch up on your spelling homework, read an extra few pages of your reading book or use your Sum-dog log in to complete some maths challenges OR you could get outside build an amazing snow structure, take a picture and e-mail the school with them. I am sure your teacher would love to see what you did on your day off. Take care and keep safe when you are outside, hope to see you tomorrow. Mrs McKenzie
Pupil Version of our School Improvement Plan
Our Pupil Council looked at our school improvement plan for this year and completed a carousel to consider what this would look like, sound like and feel like in our school.
We will share this with the rest of the children in our classes.
Message from Miss Burton
Dear parents and carers,
It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter to you. You will already know that I have accepted the Acting Head Teacher post at Pumpherston and Uphall Station Community Primary School. The post is Acting, which means my substantive post is as Depute Head Teacher at Mid Calder and I may return in the future. However, for now I would like to thank all the parents and families of our school who have supported me throughout my time at Mid Calder, especially our PSA and Parent Council.
Whilst I am excited about this new venture, it is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye. For the last 3 1/2 years, I have been very proud to be your Depute Head Teacher as our school and nursery have moved from strength to strength. I will miss our staff who work hard everyday to provide the best learning experiences for your children, and with whom I have had lots of laughs with over the years. I would especially like to thank Mrs McKenzie who I have thoroughly enjoyed working with over the last year, both as a colleague and a friend.
Our memories are our greatest treasure and, for me, my greatest memories during my time at MCPS are of your children. We have had so many positive experiences and I hope that I have supported them to ‘believe, achieve and succeed’ and make memories that they will remember in years to come. I know that I leave taking many fond and happy memories from my time with them.
I look forward to keeping up with your adventures on our school blog and twitter.
Kind regards,
Miss Burton
Aims Assembly
On Friday we had an assembly to share our new school aims that the pupil council rewrote into child friendly language. Each stage took a different aim.
- P1: We aim to have fun and interesting learning where everyone tries their best.
- P2: We aim to live by our school values and have a welcoming school.
- P3: We aim to develop our skills and recognise achievements.
- P4: We aim to provide an exciting place to learn and to learn about things that interest us.
- P5: We aim to connect our school life to our home life and our local community.
- P6: We aim to become independent learners by making our own choices and decisions.
- P7: We aim to be prepared for transitions and the world of work.
The nursery also created a video to share their values with us.
Primary 5C Class Charter
All of P5c are very excited about the start of our P5 journey and looking forward to all of the challenges ahead. We have spent the first 2 weeks of term getting to know one another and deciding what we need to do to ensure we have a safe, calm and happy environment to work in. The boys and girls decided on a ‘Busy Bee’ theme for our class charter, as we are all expecting to be kept very busy in the coming months…
We revisited our school values and the children came up with lots of ways in which we can make sure these are upheld. We then decided on which childrens’ rights to include and discussed what we will need to do to ensure everyone’s rights are met; these were displayed on flowers which we made to keep our bees busy!
We have all signed our class contract and hopefully our P5c Charter will help us to have a happy and successful year this session.
P1P Class Charter
During the first two weeks, Primary 1 have been looking at the story of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. This story is all about being kind and friendly to others through sharing. We thought this linked well to our own classroom expectations and some of our School Values.
Through various activities we have explored the Rainbow Fish further and have also shared our thoughts and ideas on our school’s values. We used these brilliant ideas to create a Rainbow Fish themed Class Charter that also linked to the UN Rights of the Child.
Each bubble contains something that we think is important for us in and around the classroom and each shell contains one of our school values. We have all signed a scale on the Rainbow Fish to remind ourselves that we have agreed to our Class Charter and will use this throughout Primary 1. Brilliant work Primary 1!
