Hadden Construction Safety Competition

Hadden Construction are building our new Nursery and they set us the challenge of designing a safety poster for the building site. As Primary 1 have been learning all about building they judged the competition. The winners were announced at assembly this morning and received a gift voucher funded by Hadden Construction. We are also using the rest of the donation to buy some new books for our new library.

A big well done to everyone who took part and thank you to Hadden Construction.

Digital Learning Week in the Nursery

The Primary 5 boys and girls came to the nursery to show us how to use the beebots. They learned positional language, forwards, backwards, side to side, left and right. They used these directions to program the beebots and make them move. They linked it to number by rolling the dice and the number they rolled was the number of moves the beebot would make.

“They were going backwards and front ways!” – Sophia

“They were really fun.” – Eilidh

“I liked the beebots because I made mine go round in a circle.” – Hannah

We used the visualiser to project the children’s writing on to the smartboard. They were able to show their friends how they wrote their name and how they formed letters. They loved seeing their work on display.

The children have continued to use the ipad apps and have enjoyed choosing songs for the new ipod! They are now in control of the music in the nursery!

The go pro was in full swing keeping track of the children’s learning. It was keeping active and was also used for the children interviewing each other about what they were doing.

Some of the boys and girls have been practicing their keyboard skills while learning their letters and sounds.

The children then helped Mrs Murray do the blog post to share their learning.

Digital Learning Week: Sumdog Contest

P1-7 have been entered to take part in Sumdog’s special Scottish contest to celebrate Education Scotland’s National Digital Learning Week. This runs from 12-18th May and can be played at both home and at school using the Sumdog website or app. All pupils should have their Sumdog log in their homework diary/ book.

The children have to answer 1000 questions and their score is based on accuracy, not speed or winning games. There are also prizes to be won and certificates will be given out at assembly for those children in the top 50 from across Scotland.

Good luck everyone!

Digital Learning Week: Supporting Learning at Home

Sum Dog and Purple Mash are two online resources we have purchased to support learning and teaching in Maths and Language. These resources can be used in school and at home. The PSA have helped us to purchase Purple Mash.

Teachers may set homework using these resources, however if homework has not been set parents can use these resources to support Maths and Language development at home.

Sum Dog

P1-7 have a Sum Dog Reading and Maths account. They can access this account at home by using the log in provided in their homework diary/book.

To access Sum Dog go to: http://www.sumdog.com/

If you have an apple device you can download the Sum Dog app for free.

Purple Mash

P1-7 have a Purple Mash account. They can access this account at home by using the log in provided in their homework diary/book.

Newsletter

Dear Parents / Carers,

What an exciting but extremely busy term ahead for everyone involved with Mid Calder Primary School.

Primary 7 have begun the countdown for  transition to High School and the nursery children have started transition arrangements for moving up to P1. It is an exciting but nervous time for them and I am sure as parents you will experience the same feelings.

Probability in P5B

Learning Intention: We are learning to talk about how likely something is to happen and can order events on a simple probability scale

  • I can talk about how likely something is to happen using a wide range of vocabulary
  • I can order events on a simple probability scale
  • I can create my own simple probability scale and place events on this

In maths this week, P5B were learning all about probability. We focused on the key vocabulary of the topic, using words such as certain, good chance, even chance, unlikely and impossible to describe different events. We found it more difficult than we thought we would to think of examples that were impossible, although we were pretty sure that none of us would be eaten by a dragon our way home from school!

We had to order given events on a probability scale, as well as adding our own examples. There was lots of rich discussion going on as some of us had very different answers to certain statements based on our likes and dislikes and our lifestyle habits. We also took part in a probability Sumdog challenge. We look forward to learning more about chance and uncertainty, unless we were all eaten by dragons after all!

The Lion King

L.I. We are learning about the marketing of a show

We are learning to design and create a ticket/programme

S.C. – I can use persuasive language and present my information clearly

-I can include the key dates and information, i.e. venue, date, time price

Rehearsals are well underway for our Middle Area show and Primary 5 have been working hard this week on some behind-the-scenes preparations.

Our Marketing team have begun putting together a blog post to share information about the upcoming show; they have used persuasive language in their post and lots of highly descriptive language to hook in readers and convince them not to miss this fantastic production!

Our Ticketing and Programme teams have also been hard at work putting together a draft programme and sharing ideas for how we want our tickets to look. They have discussed the key information which needs to be included on both tickets and programmes and have tried to come up with designs which are simple but effective, bearing in mind that we will (hopefully!) have lots of tickets to print.

All of our teams are full of enthusiasm for the show and we ‘just can’t wait’ for you to see it…

Dishing Out Our Digital Knowledge

Today, representatives from Eastertoun Primary visited our school to find out some of the ways that we use digital technologies to enhance our learning. Primary 5B showed our guests how we share our achievements on our iAchieve blog, as well as how we have used some of the Glow tools to support and challenge us across the curriculum. We shared how Bring Your Own Device works in Mid Calder, and also gave them a tour of our class Yammer pages, explaining the different ways in which we have used these.

Next, pupils from P6 and P7 who were involved in the process of MCPS becoming a Bring Your Own Device school shared this journey with our visitors. This offered an excellent opportunity for questions to be asked and answered by pupils from both schools. Our guests also popped into Primary 4B who shared their new knowledge of the language of coding with them.

The visit ended with a chat with some of our Technical Troopers who explained some of their roles and responsibilities and how they have helped to support digital learning across the school.

We hope that our guests found their visit valuable and we look forward to hearing how they progress in their own journey using our new collaborative Yammer page.
