P5 go Samba wild!
Primary 5 took part in a fantastic music workshop today, with musicians who will perform for us tomorrow at the Catapluf Musical event. We learned about music in Brazil and Uruguay. We used or body to play music, played call and response games and then got the chance to play some of the instruments they had brought along to school.
They were right with their motto – playing music is ‘fun for free’! P5 loved grooving to the music and had smiles on their faces throughout. We are very excited about our adventure tomorrow now!
“Let us play samba, Let us play samba!”
P5 Maths – Nets
We are learning to identify the nets of 3D shapes.
I can look at a 3D object and visualise the net that it is made from.
From my visualisation, I can make a net to create a simple 3D object.
I can take apart a hollow 3D object to create its net.
We’ve had a lovely time in P5 the last couple of days, while Miss Sherlow is relaxing at school camp!! We have been investigating nets of 3D shapes, using polydron to construct 3D shapes then taking them apart to look closer at the nets. We were able to match different nets to 3D shapes and also looked at different nets that made the same shape. Here are some examples of our work: –

West Lothian Schools Burns Festival 2016
Following our school Burns Competition, Lexie (P4), Cailin (P5), Luca (P6) and Abby (P7) were selected by our panel of judges to represent our school at the West Lothian Schools Festival 2016.
Tonight the four pupils attended the competitions at St. Kentigern’s Academy and recited their poems to the judges from Fauldhouse and Crofthead Burns Club and to an audience of guests from all across West Lothian.
Abby received the award for best verse speaking in the Primary 6/7 category. She received a Burns Trophy and an individual trophy. She will now be invited along to the National Burns Competition.
A huge well done to the pupils who confidently represented our school at this competition, and to their parents and teachers for supporting them.

Curriculum Evening: Maths
On Thursday night we invited parents and carers along to find out about our world of Maths at Mid Calder Primary. As you know Maths is on our school improvement plan for the second year, we began in the hall discussing with parents our journey with maths so far. Then the Numeracy shared with us some information about SEAL (stage of early arithmetical learning) and how parents can support at home. This was followed by workshops in classes demonstrating what a typical maths lesson looks like and how parents can support their child at home. A big thank you to everyone who supported the event and to our house and vice captains who helped with the smooth running of the event.
Feedback from parents included:
- ‘These evenings are great to get ideas as to how to help my child at home’.
- ‘Our daughter talks a lot about the strategies she is learning about’.
- ‘My child is very enthusiastic when doing Maths homework’.
- ‘This was a good insight into how my child is learning and developing within Maths’.
- ‘We can see the improvements being made, keep up the good work’.

Internet Safety with P.5/4
Primary 5/4 have been learning all about how to stay safe when using the internet.
We talked about all kinds of different situations you might find yourself in when online. Here’s an example:
Someone starts destroying your game or tries to kill off your character over and over again. What would you do?
Here are some of our ideas:
- Tell an adult if you’re worried about it.
- Report the player to the website so that they can deal with it.
- Block the person from playing with you.
- Only play with people that you already know.
