P3 and P3/2’s amazing trip to North Berwick beach!

Yesterday P3 and P3/2 went on a trip to North Berwick beach. We had lots of fun playing in the sunshine with our friends. Our highlights were:

  • Enjoying a tasty ice-cream.
  • Burying ourselves in the sand!
  • Playing in the paddling pool.
  • Taking part in a sandcastle competition.
  • Digging holes in the sand.
  • Racing on the sand.
  • Walking to different parts of the beach.
  • Walking along the shore with our toes in the water.

Amelia: I enjoyed being in the paddling pool!

Alex: I enjoyed eating my ice-cream and being in the paddling pool!

Sophie: I enjoyed making big holes in the sand!

Ciara: I enjoyed making the sandcastle with my friends.

Marc: I liked eating my ice-cream and lying down on the sand.

Ignatius: I enjoyed the paddling pool. It felt weird because the water was pushing me over!

Euan: I enjoyed digging big holes in the sand!

Electricity in P2/1

Learning Intention:

  • We are learning to identify objects that use electricity from the mains electricity or alternative sources (batteries, solar panels etc.).
  • We are learning to describe an electric circuit as a continuous loop of conducting materials.

Success Criteria:

  • I can talk about the importance of electricity in our daily lives and identify different sources of electricity (wind turbine, solar panels and hydroelectric dam).
  • I can suggest objects that use mains electricity or batteries.
  • I can build a simple electric circuit including a battery, wires, bulb, buzzer and a switch.
  • I can draw a simple circuit diagram using the correct symbols.

Last week, P2/1 started learning about electricity in science. First of all we discussed different sources of electricity, such as wind turbines, solar panels and hydroelectric dams. Then we used skipping ropes to help us role play the journey of electricity to our homes in order to help electrical objects work, such as a hair dryer, television and lamp. Finally we made and decorated our own wind turbine to add to our electricity learning wall.


This week, we had to use our problem solving skills to make a simple electric circuit in a group without the help of an adult. We then discussed our findings and we discovered that the circuit had to be complete in order for the electricity to flow through the wires to make the light bulb glow! We also explored the use of a buzzer and a switch in our circuits and shared our findings with the rest of the class.

In addition to building our circuits this week, we also learned about the symbols for the different parts of our electric circuit and we were able to use this knowledge to draw a circuit diagram on a whiteboard.

We enjoyed using the UK Power Network website to research and find out about electricity (http://powerup.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/powerup/en/under-11/).

Dear Parents / Carers,

Here we are approaching the end of another school year. We have had many highlights since the beginning of the session and it will conclude with the same excitement. From Nursery to P7 the children will have their own special memory to look back on. It could be their performance in the Nativity, the production of Alice, their Remarkable Reader Award or Stem Award, a Living the Values certificate or an achievement recognised through I – Achieve. It may even be the completion of an amazing piece of work, coming up with a theme for new learning, presenting at a conference or sharing learning at their class assembly. As a school our highlights have been many but a few are, sharing our digital learning with colleagues from across West Lothian, being recognised for our achievement in peer mediation from both out with and within West Lothian, the monies we have raised for various charities and the food the children collected for local food banks. The list could go on, but I think what is most important is that every child has tried their best in everything they have completed and these accolades help us to say that they do.

 

I would like to thank the members of the PSA for all their fund raising events this year; they have worked relentless to raise money for our playground and to improve the space for the children. The grand total is over £10,000, which is a massive achievement. The Pupil Council will take time to get feedback from all children about what they would like for the playground and feed this back to the PSA to move this forward in the new year.     I hope you have a safe and happy holiday.

Mrs Sturrock visited P2s and P3s today!

Mrs Sturrock visited P2 and 3 and told us all about our brain and how it works.

We asked her lots of questions such as:

Do hamsters have the smallest brain?

What makes you you?

Can the brain break?

Does the right side of the brain control the left? (Ewan, who was trying to trick our special guest)

How is there enough space for everything in your mind?

The big message from the Educational Psychologist was that we need to challenge our minds to help it grow and that we learn from our mistakes. Sometimes we have to overlearn to remember information that we learn!

We learnt the big words neuroplasticity and neurons.

Mid Calder Gala Day

The shone on Mid Calder for their annual Children’s Gala Day. We had a great turn out from our school community to walk with us in the procession.

The Primary 7 pupils had a special treat!

We entered three school teams in the Gala Relay Races. Thank you to the children who represented our school, especially the boys team who won!

Parent/ Carer Questionnaire

Dear Parents and Carers,

Each year we invite parents to comment on the work of the school.  As we begin to plan our priorities for session 2017-2018, we would very much appreciate you taking the time to give us some feedback.

Every child in school will receive a questionnaire.  If you have more than one child in school and you feel you can represent your views on one questionnaire, please feel free to do so.  If, however you feel your child’s experiences are quite different from each other, we are happy to receive a questionnaire from each of them.
