Rainforest Art in Primary 5

Learning Intention:

We are learning how to blend colours using oil pastels to create a piece of rainforest art.

Success Criteria:

I can use pictures and images to help me accurately draw a sketch of my chosen animal

I know what colours work well together to blend my pastels effectively

Through our rainforest IDL context, we have been learning all about the people and animals that live in the rainforest. Having already learned about different rainforest animals by researching then using our notes to create a fact file, we decided to use this knowledge to help us create a piece of art. We knew all about the appearance and habitat of our chosen animals and used this to sketch out an outline of our animal before exploring how to blend colours through the medium of oil pastels. We felt very proud of the end results, and we hope that you like them too!

Data Handling in Primary 5

Learning Intention:

We are learning to sort data using Venn, Carroll and tree diagrams

Success Criteria:

  • I can use and create Venn, Carroll and tree diagrams to help me to sort information by two and three criteria
  • I have compared how the same information is displayed differently in each diagram
  • I can choose an appropriate diagram to help me sort by more than two criteria
  • I can ask and answer questions using Venn, Carroll and tree diagrams

For the last three weeks, Primary 5 have been learning about the different ways that information and data can be sorted, and this week we have been learning about Venn, Carroll and Tree diagrams. We have been sorting numbers, letters, words and footballer profiles using different criteria. We have also been using Sumdog to help us learn.

A sad farewell…

This week was bitter sweet for Mid Calder Primary School as, although we were all looking forward to our summer holidays, we also had to say goodbye to some very special members of staff. Miss Cotter has been with us at MCPS for 32 years, and so the pupils and staff worked together to give her a memorable send off with a retirement assembly. Each class gave a special performance for Miss Cotter by singing songs, sharing memories, reciting poems, and some of the children even gave her some hints and tips about how they think she should spend her retirement. All of the pupils and staff would like to wish Miss Cotter a long and happy retirement.

We also had to say a sad goodbye to Mrs Gordon, Miss Dunsmore and Miss Kerr on Friday and we wish them all the very best in their new ventures.

Summer Church Service

Despite a last minute venue change due to the infamous Scottish weather, Mid Calder Primary held its annual Summer Service on Thursday 25th June. We had poems, readings, hymns, a performance from our brass band and a P7 Prayer before Miss Thompson summed up the last year at Mid Calder Primary in a closing speech.

Well done to all of the pupils and staff who helped this event to happen with the last minute changes, and to the parents for braving the weather to support our school. Happy holidays everybody! đŸ™‚

See You Again

Primary 7 rewrote the lyrics to the song ‘See You Again’ for their Leavers Assembly and performed it for the school and their parents while this slideshow played behind them. The pictures capture the happy times that Primary 7 have shared in their final year at Mid Calder Primary School đŸ™‚

Visit from the Fire Brigade

The Primary 6s were visited by a team from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service today who taught them all about the dangers of deliberate fire setting, making hoax calls and general fire safety. They were also able to learn about the job that this team does and had a chance to look at some of the equipment that they use to help them. Everyone was reminded of how important this job is when the team had to leave half way through the session when they received an emergency call out. Thankfully it was a false alarm and they were able to return to finish their presentation. Thank you to the firemen for an interesting and informative talk.

Term 4 Achievement Awards

Yesterday we had our Achievement Assembly for Term 4. Each class nominated one pupil to receive the Achievement Award for their class. Parents and carers were invited along to watch the assembly.

We also gave out Star Writer Awards, Top Scorer prizes, sporting trophies and announced the winning house for the term. The school was also awarded a certificate for our continued support for the Smoke Free Home and Zones project.

Well done who everyone who received an award!
