P4’s Dinosaur Museum

This term Primary 4 have been working hard to bring the memory of dinosaurs back to life! We accepted a challenge from Mr T.Rex at the National Museum of Scotland, who asked us to set up our very own Mid Calder Museum. TheĀ children have enjoyed learning about dinosaurs and taking on different roles such as explorers, palaeontologists and museum curators.

Today P2, P3 and P4 opened the doors to their museum to boys and girls across the school. Our dinosaur exhibits included:

  • Powerpoints and videos
  • Fact files
  • Dinosaur stories
  • Sorting activities using Venn diagrams
  • Volcanoes
  • Dinosaur eggs
  • Fossil hunts and much much more!

Carla: At first, when you told us we were creating a museum I wasn’t that excited. But now I’m loving it!

Olivia: I was so nervous at the start but this is actually so fun!

Isla: I love doing this!

HaveĀ a look at our museum in action!

P4 go to the Museum!

This week Primary 4 went to the National Museum of Scotland to explore the exhibits and take part in a Dinosaur workshop. We began by taking a look at the different exhibits at the museum, paying particular attention to Dinosaur displays. The children enjoyed looking at the T-Rex skeleton and were amazed at the size of the bones!

We then took part in a workshop where each small group had the opportunity to take on the role of Palaeontologists. The children were set a task to piece together evidence and work out which dinosaurĀ the evidenceĀ belonged to. Each group looked at dinosaur foot prints, fossils and dinosaur teeth!

We had a roaring good time!

P4’s Dinosaur Maths Week

This week Primary 4Ā collected dataĀ using our IDL context of Dinosaurs. We decided that it would be fun to find out the favourite dinosaur at Mid Calder Primary School.

Each Dino Data Group visited a different class to collect and record their data. We then looked at the data as a class to interpret our findings.

The most popular dinosaur at Mid Calder Primary School was the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the least popular dinosaur was the Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus.

FIRST LEVEL INDICATORS:

  • I have used a range of ways to collect information and can sort it in a logical, organised and imaginative way using criteria.
  • I can ask and answer questions about data that has been collected.

P4 Community Contract

Primary 4 have had an enjoyable start to the term building our class community. We have spent time over the first two weeks developing a class community contract to help ensure we have a fantastic start to P4. We looked at children’s rights from the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and picked out 4 that we thought related to life around the school. We used these rights and our school valuesĀ to create a community contract with a Minion theme. Our contract states that:

We will try our best and encourage others.

We will help each other and work as a team.

We will keep our classroom and school tidy.

We will listen to and respect each other.

We will be kind, friendly and polite.

Using our Minions theme we have made a colourful and fun community contract!

P3’s Transition Challenge

Over the last two weeks we have been learning how to do a transition challenge to show Mrs Walker’s Primary 2s what it will be like in Primary 3!

To prepare for this we were arranged into small groups. In our groups we had to work together to decide how we would present our given area. The areas we shared were:

  • What is expected from a P3 pupil.
  • What topics we covered.
  • What Numeracy and Maths looks like in P3.
  • What Literacy looks like in P3.
  • What Health and Well-being looks like in P3.

Lewis C: We worked well as a team because were talking nicely to each other.

Daisy: I enjoyed making props for our presentation.

Alex: I enjoyed creating and presenting a role play about being independent in the classroom.

Carla: I really liked writing a script and making props.

Marc: I really liked making pictures with a script on the back.

P3 and P3/2’s amazing trip to North Berwick beach!

Yesterday P3 and P3/2 went on a trip to North Berwick beach. We had lots of fun playing in the sunshine with our friends. Our highlights were:

  • Enjoying a tasty ice-cream.
  • Burying ourselves in the sand!
  • Playing in the paddling pool.
  • Taking part in a sandcastle competition.
  • Digging holes in the sand.
  • Racing on the sand.
  • Walking to different parts of the beach.
  • Walking along the shore with our toes in the water.

Amelia: I enjoyed being in the paddling pool!

Alex: I enjoyed eating my ice-cream and being in the paddling pool!

Sophie: I enjoyed making big holes in the sand!

Ciara: I enjoyed making the sandcastle with my friends.

Marc: I liked eating my ice-cream and lying down on the sand.

Ignatius: I enjoyed the paddling pool. It felt weird because the water was pushing me over!

Euan: I enjoyed digging big holes in the sand!

P3’s Digital Learning Week!

This week P3 have been thinking about Digital Literacy and how it is used in our classroom to support and enhance learning.Ā P3 think that Digital Literacy:

  • Gives children a different way to present information and demonstrate their learning.
  • Allows children to explore Numeracy, Literacy and other curriculum areasĀ in a fun wayĀ through games and apps such as Sumdog and Purple Mash.
  • Allows children to share and discuss our learning through Sway and Yammer.
  • Helps children to concentrate because it is a fun way to learn.
  • Lets children explore new things that they have not seen before.
  • Helps to prepare children for CEM testing.

We also had a visit from the Technical Troopers this week who delivered a fantastic lesson showing the children how to create a questionnaire using Forms. The children loved this and were able to create questionnaires based on our context of Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds.

Miss Clark: The Technical Troopers did a great job of showing the children how to create their questionnaires step by step.

Eilidh: I enjoyed learning how to make a questionnaire with pictures and videos!

Lewis Adams: I liked being able to pick a picture to add to my questionnaire.

Marc: I think the Technical Troopers were helpful and they showed me how to add a video and picture to my questionnaire.

Ben: The Technical Troopers were very kind and let us take our time using the netbooks.

Alex: I enjoyed the Technical Troopers teaching us more about using the Glow page to learn new things!

The Primary 3’s had fun at our Brilliant Baby Gym Assembly!

Last Friday Primary 3 presented an assembly all about our Baby Gym Challenge. We had to work really hard when designing, building and selling our baby gyms so we couldn’t wait to share our learning with everyone.

Ignatius: “I was so excited to go on stage and hold up my ‘nose’ picture!”

Lewis C: “When I was doing the Boss Baby Rap I was really nervous but I enjoyed it!”

Carla: “I enjoyed doing the Boss Baby Rap because I got to do some funny dance moves.”

Ben: “At first I didn’t want to be a Boss Baby. But once I had done it I wasn’t so nervous andĀ  enjoyed it after all!”

P3 BABY GYM ASSEMBLY

The day Baby Ailish and Natalie came to visit Primary 3!

Primary 3 received a letter from Natalie and baby Ailish asking us to design and build a baby gym. We decided to make the Baby Gym Challenge our topic this term.

We have enjoyed working in small design teams to design and build the ultimate baby gym to meet baby Ailishs’. needs. We worked hard to create 4 toys to help develop Ailishs’ sense of touch, smell, hearing and sight.

This week Natalie and baby Ailish came to visit and look at our baby gyms. Here are some pictures that show this lovely visit:
