November witnessed the first meeting of the PE working group at St Margaret’s Academy. The group is made up of primary and secondary PE specialists, school staff members and senior management and has been tasked with reflecting on the second and third level PE provision across the St Margaret’s cluster. The inaugural meeting was attended by 19 members of primary and secondary staff who discussed the PE provision currently on offer to P6 and P7 pupils across the associated primaries and S1 and S2 pupils within St Margaret’s.
Karen McCubbin, PE Support Officer for West Lothian, was on hand to present a national perspective from Education Scotland relating to teaching practices within PE. The presentation resulted in some lively debate and discussion regarding different approaches to the delivery of PE and the current demands in this curricular area. The group will meet again in February to plan for a more co-ordinated approach to PE within the cluster from 2013/2014 but activities have also been agreed for 2012/13 that will complement the delivery of PE within this academic session. These include:
· A curricular P7 Athletics event for associated primaries hosted at St Margaret’s before Easter.
· Curricular dance opportunities offered to all associated primaries in preparation for an additional event at St Margaret’s.
