Strategies for Mental Addition

Following discussion with parents we will be sharing some information about ways that we are developing mental strategies in maths in P5 to support parents and pupils at home. There are many different strategies for children to use when working with number. The children are encouraged to try different strategies and explain their thinking.

This video is a good example of how we partition tens and units in addition.

When adding numbers we talk a lot about friendly numbers or fact families that we know can help us. The following video talks about using this strategy to support mental addition.

The children are becoming more confident in explaining their strategies for working out a range of problems on the Vittle app so we will be sharing more of those too! Stay tuned!

Here Billie and Anneliese are explaining how they use written addition for adding larger numbers.
