Steve the Spider

This week we have had an unexpected visitor in P5S. While the children were at P.E. Miss Solomon came across a big spider in our classroom so we decided to put our research skills to the test to work out what sort of spider ‘Steve’ is.

We had a few clues. Miss Solomon found him in the sink, he ran really fast to get away when she tried to put him in his container and he must have been a spider found in the UK. We all had a really good look at him and started researching in our groups using the netbooks.

We learned we had to use our clues to be successful in narrowing down all the spiders in the world to just one  and decided that he is probably not a Mexican or New Zealand spider who went for a holiday. In the end it was very close but Nicholas, Molly, Amina, Lleyton and Amy worked it out the fastest.

Steve is a Giant House Spider!

We all shared some fun facts about Giant House Spiders. We learned that boys like Steve leave their webs looking for a girlfriend inside houses and sheds, they can nip you if you pick them up but their venom won’t harm humans, they are one of the fastest running spiders in the world, they appear around Autumn time and they are often found in sinks and baths after they fall in while on their quest.

We know that we need to be careful and not touch or bother spiders. Wwe noticed that Steve was more scared of us than we were of him.

Ethan suggested that we let Steve go so he could keep looking for his girlfriend and we got to see him sprint away!
