Hello Parents and Families,
As you will see from the photos below, the children have been learning about 2D shapes recently. They were able to identify squares, circles, squares and rectangles in their classroom environment and enjoyed making each shape using paint, chalk, elastic and straws. Next time they will make a shape house using their cutting skills and patterns using shapes they have cut out.
We have had a noisy classroom of late with making instruments from recyclable materials brought in from home. We had a range from violins to drums. The children were very creative! Our sense of sound was tested to the limits with the loud and quiet sounds we made :-). We moved onto learning about the sense of smell this week. We experienced the smell of honey and orange peel, coffee beans, vinegar and curry powder. We discovered that some people like smells that we do not and vice versa. We also learned how our sense of smell can alert us to danger such as a fire and how a skunk squirts a bad smell when it feels it is being hunted. This made us giggle.
We have been busy making words with the new sounds we have learned and also have been introduced to ‘tricky words’ that we cannot sound out. This week we met ‘the’. We put it in a sentence, wrote it on white boards and formed it using playdough. Next week we will meet ‘I’ and ‘to’.
Now that we are familiar with our classroom, we decided we would take a school tour. The children had to search for different things that we see in school each day and tick them off as we discovered where they were.
