Library Visits

We are so lucky to have the opportunity to go and visit our local library in West Calder. Our librarian Ann invited us along to listen to some lovely stories and we sang a few songs on the way and while we were there.

The children did so well walking all the way along to West Calder and back. We saw lots of things on the way, feathers, leaves and lots of numbers. We decided on the way back to collect lots of different leaves so that all the children could investigate them in nursery a little closer.

The children were asked what they liked best about the library, this was their response:

“The book’s Thomas”- Cai

“I liked doing a puppet show” Laila

“The high school was cool and the walk was fun” Aria

” I liked the grand old duke of york book” Kori.

We can’t wait for our next visit to get our bookbug stamp!

Discovering Minibeasts

The children decided to go on a Bug hunt, they were looking around the garden and under logs. They found snails, worms and slugs and were very eager to find homes for them. From this sharing of interest and care the children helped Mrs Gray to set up a discovery Garden. This followed on to being creative using Putty and clay to make there own minibeasts/insects. We aslo used string as worms and paint  to create abstract art.

Harvesting.

We were amazed at the amount of apples on our tree in the garden, we picked them, washed and peeled them and made a lovely apple crumble for snack. We are learning how food can be prepared and eaten in different ways.

We have also been harvesting our  vegetables from the Nursery garden. We had a good crop of potatoes and carrots the children had lots of fun digging them out and were curious about the process from ground to plate.

Settling in and Emotions

A warm and happy welcome back to the new term! We have lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities and adventures in store for the children.

We are starting the session by looking at emotions and friendships. This is a very exciting time for the children as they are learning the new rules and routines of nursery life, making new friends and sharing their thoughts and feelings throughout this process.

The children have been meeting our Mood Monsters.

They aim to help the children think about how they are feeling and talking about it amongst their peers.  The children can select their name upon entering nursery and place it on one of our mood monsters.

This is a lovely way to engage with the children and encourages lots of discussion amongst their peers.  It also helps them to develop an awareness of their feelings and understanding different emotions.  We will be building on this when discussing friendships and the importance of being kind, fair and respectful towards others.

The children have enjoyed talking about personal experiences as the build friendships, discussing what makes them happy, sad, worried, angry and so on…..

“I really like chocolate cake. That is when I am happy” Hope

Eva “I am happy when I hug Amelia. She is my friend!”

“When I play games I am happy. I like sandy girl” Macey

Zoe “Evie and Lewis are my friends. We play outside”
