Green Flag success

Briony, one of the assessors for Eco Schools Scotland, paid us a visit today to decide whether we had completed enough work to award us another Green Flag award.

She spoke to the Eco Committee, pupils, staff and took a tour of the school. She looked at our evidence folders, displays and the school development plan. Briony was delighted at our progress with the school grounds and also with our focus areas for 2014-2016 which are Litter, Health and Sustainability (Sustaining our World) and for this reason she was pleased to give us the award. She will send a new flag and a summary report shortly, which we will share with you all.

Congratulations everyone. A job well done.

Sensory Garden donations from Morrisons

20160106_121022

A big thank you to our Morrisons Community Champion, Fiona Hendry, for organising some plants to help with the development of our sensory garden. We now have more herbs and lavendar plants planted and elsewhere on our school grounds are tubs of dwarf conifers. In the spring we will transplant the dwarf conifers into bigger tubs and these shall be their forever home.

Christmas Jumper Day

The pupils at Meldrum Primary School wore their Christmas jumpers to school today, raising money for charity at the same time.

A total of £282.33 pence was raised for CLIC Sargent, a charity to help families deal with childhood cancer.  This was a fantastic effort from all involved and a great way to end the term.

Well done!

Rugby in P5

P5 have been very fortunate to have had rugby training this term. Over the weeks we’ve learned new skills and rules and have progressed to playing touch rugby matches. We have really enjoyed the experience and lots of us have been inspired to join a club to keep training and playing.

Here are some things we’ve learned:

‘Now I know to do a ‘W’ shape with my hands to catch the ball. There are 15 people in a rugby team so 30 on the pitch all together. You can’t pass forward but have to run forwards then pass the ball backwards.’ Ellie T

‘I am now able to pass the ball properly by pointing at where you want the ball to go as you throw it. I’m better at working in a team.’ Paul

‘I am able to evade people better and to pass the ball more accurately.’ Now I’d like to get more rugby involved at Meldrum.’ Ryan G

Winter Ready West Lothian

West Lothian Council has launched its public information campaign Winter Ready West Lothian 2015/16.

The campaign highlights the council’s preparations for possible severe weather and encourages local people to prepare now. Severe winter weather can include snow, frost and low temperatures, high winds and flooding.

More information is available at www.westlothian.gov.uk/winter

As with previous years the council has:

  • Maintained salt stocks.
  • Set up contracts with local suppliers for severe weather support.
  • Provided an email alert service so that regular information can be sent direct to your inbox.
  • Delivered refresher training to staff on all severe weather equipment.
  • Published a Winter Ready supplement in the winter issue of Bulletin, the council newspaper.

The council is also asking residents and local businesses to help:

  • Park sensibly – abandoned vehicles can cause serious issues.
  • Share information with friends and neighbours, and spare a moment for vulnerable neighbours.
  • Stay informed. Sign up for the email alert on the council’s website at www.westlothian.gov.uk/email, like the council Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/westlothiancouncil or follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/lovewestlothian for updates.
  • If you are able, clear the path and pavement in front of your home.
  • Prepare your car and home ahead of the winter.
  • Keep the winter issue of Bulletin handy.
  • Parents and carers should also ensure that their child’s school has up to date contact information.
  • Should severe weather hit, Groupcall is the way that schools will inform parents and carers about closures.
