Meldrum Messages – Friday 5th June 2026

How on earth are we in the month of June already?  I’m not sure where the first half of the year has gone!  This week, the weather was not kind to us and we had to postpone our Sports Day.  A new date of 18th June was shared with you, keep everything crossed we will be in a better position to go ahead on that date.  Our P4 pupils had a soggy visit to 5 Sisters Zoo on Wednesday.  The rain didn’t dampen their enthusiasm for the visit and everyone enjoyed seeing a range of animals and the workshop that they took part in about Habitats and Adaptations.

Mrs Brown has decided to reduce her working hours and from August, will be working for 3 days per week.  Following recruitment processes, I am pleased to tell you that Miss Jones has been successful in securing part time Principal Teacher (Acting) and is now part of our school leadership team.  I am sure that you will join me in offering both ladies your good wishes for the coming school year.

A very big thank you to the Parent Council members and volunteers who organised and ran our Spring Fayre last Saturday.  The event raised over £650 which will be used to support school initiatives.  The next fundraising activity that our Parent Council are running is the chance for one pupil from each class to win a signed class ball.  Information about how to enter was shared with you earlier this week.

Applications for the school clothing grant and free school meals and milk are now open.  You should already have been sent details about this however you can find the link here below.  We would encourage parents of younger children who are eligible for free meals to apply even though meals are free to all.

P7 Friday 5th June

This week we have been practising for our leaver’s assembly which is exhausting but fun. We are all excited to present it to the teachers, pupils and parents on the 19th June.

We also did a class Sumdog competition and are excited to see who are at the top of the leader board.

On Thursday we got our timetables for high school. We are looking forward to attend transition next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

At P.E. this week we did basketball in the hall as the weather was not good enough to go outside.

Great Green (Things that went well)

  • This week we have all been showing greater respect and listening to one another.

Think Pink (Things we want to get better at)

  • Learning our script for the Leaver’s Assembly.

This week our Lead Learners are Rosie and Adam for demonstrating respect.  Well done!

(Thank you Sierra for writing our blog this week).

Primary 2 – Friday 5th June 2026

Another great week in Primary 2! Despite the rainy weather, we’ve had lots of fun learning about different countries taking part in this year’s World Cup. The children are beginning to feel excited about the upcoming holidays and their move into Primary 3. I’ve reminded them all that we still have three weeks to go and there’s plenty more learning and fun ahead.

Great Green: Recently we have enjoyed…

-Becoming experts at our 2 and 10 times tables.

-Writing about the life cycles of butterflies and frogs.

-Finding out information about Ghana (one of our countries in the World Cup!)

Think Pink: Next week we will work on…

-Making links between multiplication and division (inverse operations!)

-Investigate and explore Argentina (another one of our countries in the World Cup!)

-Being courteous, kind and thinking of others when playing and working together. We are also going to focus on keeping the toilets and area tidy after playing.

Lead Learners:

Well done to Rosie and Matthew for being our lead learners this week. They have done a wonderful job helping the other children and encouraging them to be kind.

Our lead learners next week are Ellie and Annie. They are responsible learners, showing courage and perseverance if they make a mistake, knowing we are always learning… even as adults… and that’s a good thing!

P6 – Friday 5th June 2026

This week we have been creative, designing and making a t-shirt for the world cup competition. Creativity was also demonstrated when making and designing our sports biscuits which we completed in a mature way 😊.

Great Green

  • On Thursday, we had a session with the new P1’s and all demonstrated great responsibility and kindness to our new buddies.
  • This week we made sport biscuits in theme with sports day (that was cancelled ☹), world cup and Commonwealth Games. Next week we will write a recount piece on the process we went through to make them.
  • In outdoor learning with Mrs Brown on Tuesday, we had to use teamwork and critical thinking to design and problem solve. We were to make bridges using natural materials from the playground and most people achieved this!
  • In P.E with Mrs Harris, she extended our knowledge of the sport Basketball.

Think Pink

  • To monitor the weather more closely before going outside for the daily mile – we got drenched!
  • Reflect on our work to continue to apply skills and targets more independently.
  • Getting changed for P.E sensibly in the changing rooms.

Lead Learner Update

Our Lead Learners next week will be Charleigh and Elle. They both worked so hard this week and consistently show kindness and perseverance – well done ladies!

Primary 1 – 5.6.26

In Primary 1 this week we have been using coins to make a range of amounts. We have lots of fun using money in the home corner and using digital technology to practise our skills.

We were building a café using the building blocks and we used the pizza to sell food.

We also learned what day we were born on and used data handling skills to collect information to share.

Great Green: “What went well…”

-In Maths, we can identify a range of coins and use these to make simple amounts.

-We have been using dictation again to practise our writing skills. We can use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Think Pink: “Even better if…”

-Next week, we will continue to practise our money.

-We want to learn about different countries and flags in the lead up to the World Cup.

Lead Learners:

Well done to Thomas and Cody.

Next weeks lead learners are Azaleea and Tanishq for showing responsibility and perseverance in their writing.

Primary 5 Friday 5th June

We are getting a bit of World Cup fever in Primary 5. Great opportunity for Numeracy and Maths!! e.g. flags have lots of lines, shapes and angles, populations are very large numbers, and time differences are really challenging the class.

Great Green – ‘What went well’

• Our dioramas are really taking shape. We have shed, benches, greenhouse, paths and ponds. Lots of fabulous ideas being realised through technology skills.

Think Pink – ‘Even better if’

 We are continuing to fill our ‘filing cabinets’ in our brains with key knowledge and understanding, ready for Primary 6!

Lead Learners.

Our lead learners this week are Darcey and Joe. They have stepped up in all aspects of learning and taking responsibility for classroom organisation and tasks.

Meldrum Messages – Friday 29th May 2026

We have made the most of the lovely weather this week here at Meldrum with lots of learning activities taking place outside!  I think everyone felt happy to see the sunshine, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it returns again soon!

A huge congratulations to the P7 pupils who proudly represented our school this week at the West Lothian schools Track and Field event on Wednesday and at the Deans Community High School P7 mathematics contest on Thursday.  Staff who accompanied pupils to these activities reported that our pupils showed our school values and were a credit to their families.  Well done everyone! Our P5 pupils enjoyed a session with the West Lothian Council Ranger service on Wednesday afternoon which linked with their current class work and again, were excellent ambassadors for our school.  Good job P5!

Our Parent Council Spring Fayre takes place tomorrow (Saturday 30th May) from 12pm – 3pm.  We hope to see many of you there.

Sports Day is planned for Thursday 4th June at 9.30am.  The forecast currently doesn’t look great but a decision will be made nearer the time on whether the field is safe for us to use and we will communicate this with families via our groupcall system.  Keep everything crossed that the forecast changes and we can go ahead with sports as planned!

Next Week

Saturday – Spring Fayre 12pm – 3pm (volunteers welcome!)

Monday – No brass lessons today.

Tuesday – Rescheduled brass lessons – instruments required.

Wednesday – P4 trip to 5 Sisters Zoo. P1 and P7 NHS dental checks taking place in school.  Parent Council meeting online at 6.30pm.

P7 Friday 29th May

We have had lots of achievements in P7 this week.

On Wednesday ten pupils attended the West Lothian Track Field Event at Craigswood Sports Centre. All pupils competed with great perseverance and sportsmanship. Meldrum came 3rd in both the girls and boys relay races and Jason came third in the 80m sprint. Well done everyone who took part.

On Thursday 2 teams of four attended the DCHS P7 Maths competition. The children had to complete three events applying their numeracy, maths and problem solving skills. One group came joint second and the other came joint third. Well done to both groups.

On Monday we took our P1 buddies out in the sunshine to complete our sensory trails. We really enjoyed this especially when the buddies wanted us to wear the eye masks and lead us around the playground.

Great Green (Things that went well)

  • Being excellent ambassadors for Meldrum at the different events this week.

Think Pink (Things we want to get better at)

  • Learning our songs for the Leaver’s Assembly.

This week our Lead Learners are Gokul and Lavanya for consistently demonstrating good manners and respect.  Well done!

They have decided that next week Respect should still be the value that we are focussing on.

Primary 2 – Friday 29th May 2026

What a sunny week we’ve had in Primary 2! We have enjoyed planting outside with Ms Stewart and taking part in our Daily Mile. We enjoyed a lovely whole school assembly celebrating many important sports events that have taken place over week.

Great Green: Recently we have enjoyed…

-We have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We can explain how a butterfly lays an egg, becomes a caterpillar and he has to eat lots and lots before turning into a chrysalis. After 10-15 days, a butterfly will emerge!

-We have been continuing to investigate symmetry in our outdoor learning. We have been drawing half shapes using chalk and our partner then has to draw the other half. We also made symmetrical stick bugs, snakes, spiders, butterflies and grasshoppers using stick and other natural materials.

Think Pink: We are working on…

-We will be continuing to look at place value and adding and subtracting 10 using number squares to help us.

-We have had warm and sunny weather this week. We must remember to take care of ourselves and stay safe in the sunshine. Try to wear suncream, a sunhat and sunglasses.

Lead Learners:

Well done to Willow and Alaya for being our lead learners this week. They have done a wonderful job helping around the school and classroom.

Our lead learners next week are Matthew and Rosie. They have had a fantastic week, persevering in writing and numeracy.
