Pancake making in p2

This week we made pancakes with Mrs Jamieson. It was lots of fun and we enjoyed eating them as a snack. We also had a pancake tossing competition. It was very funny.

Liam “We had to put eggs, milk, flour, sugar and salt in a bowl and mixed them together.”

Noah Y “It was fun trying to toss the pancake.”

Aaliyah “I liked it when Noah flipped the pancake and it landed on his head.”

Megan “I had syrup on mine, they were delicious.”

***Pupil of the week*** Noah Y is pupil of the week for always working hard and behaving well. Well done!

We are looking forward to our parents visiting next Friday morning for the open morning.

S.O.S. from Class 3!

Class 3 have been finding out about the wireless operators who worked on the Titanic.

There were two of them and their main job was to send messages from the passengers and to pick up messages from other ships.

They sent messages using a spark gap transmitter.  We searched online and found a clip of a spark gap transmitter in action.

Josh really liked listening to the buzzing sound that was made by this transmitter, he said this was his favourite activity of the afternoon.

We could see why the wireless operators were nicknamed ‘Sparks’!

The messages were sent in morse code. We found a morse code app on the iPads and had a go for ourselves.

Jason used the  iPad to write letters in Morse Code. He says that he enjoyed trying to figure out the dots and dashes for each letter.

Geordie says that you could type your name into the iPad and dots and dashes appeared – your name in Morse Code!

Then we decided to link the iPads via Bluetooth.

We  used one as a transmitter and one as a receiver and sent an S.O.S message in morse code from one iPad to the other.

Geordie says S.O.S. is an emergency signal for when you are in danger.

Josh can remember that the morse code for S.O.S. is 3 dots, 3 dashes then 3 dots.

The Titanic sent S.O.S. signals as well as another distress signal when it was sinking, one of the first times that S.O.S. had been used.

Other ships picked up these signals and one called the Carpathia was able to come and help the survivors.

P5a Learn About Extinction

This week we have been learning more about animals and extinction. Did you know that the Passenger Pigeon was the most common species of bird in the world? Unfortunately people liked to hunt these birds and their numbers very quickly dropped. The last bird of this species died on September 1st, 1914 (her name was Martha). This species is the only species that we know the exact date and time it became extinct (1pm to be precise).

On Wednesday we had an important visit from Education Scotland and the Scottish Government. They came to observe how we are using iPads (and other ICT equipment) to support our learning. During this visit we learned about Ospreys in Scotland. In 1916 ospreys were extinct in Scotland. Since then there have been laws passed to protect ospreys, and to try and encourage them to return to Scotland. We were very pleased to learn that humans can use positive actions to promote conservation and to prevent extinction.

There are a few webcams that show nesting sites of Scottish Osprey – although the ospreys will not be back until the end of April.

What a quick week this has been!

We are developing our skill with coordinates and played games of finding characters from ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ on our ‘map’.

We looked at part of a story from ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ and then tried to change it into a script. Mrs. Ghafoor was impressed by how quickly we understood how to do this!

We are ‘attacking’ our project from two angles! We are looking at people in the 16th century and focussing on writing a biography for Mary Queen of Scots. We get to write a biography about a person of our own choice once Mrs. Ghafoor shows us how to do it. This week we completed the front covers for our biographies and next week we will be highlighting important information so that we can write about our Famous Scot.

We also learned that before the Chinese New Year, the Chinese hold FIFTEEN  days of festivities finishing with preparation of the ‘Lantern Festival’.

This Sunday is the beginning of the ‘ Year of the Snake’, sooo

Gung Hei Fat Choi!

News from P2pg

This week we finished our topic on the senses with us looking at smell and touch.  The children were eager to carry out our experiments on smell!  There were lots of ideas about all the things we were smelling, but as we could not use our sense of taste some of the smells were really hard to guess.  We all loved this topic and are a bit sad that it’s over, but we are really looking forward to our castle topic.  We have been writing all the things we know about castle and giving Ms Gavin some ideas of what we want included in our learning.

In maths we were learning about number lines and how to use them to help us add and subtract.  We made some really nice number lines and we’ve got frogs to help us jump up and down to find the right answers.

Pupil of the week is Tobin Witt for his wonderful sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives.  Tobin’s sentences included … ‘The orange door swan.  The green book played.  The brown mat danced.’ Well done Tobin!

Well done P2pg.

P4l Weekly Update

Hello from P4l

Another week has whizzed by and it is Friday already.  We ended the week with some Chinese New Year arts and crafts making super snake spirals and lovely lucky money wallets.  Goodbye to Year of the Dragon and hello Year of the Snake.

We used our letter writing skills again this week and were given a free choice as to who we could write to.  We amazed Mrs Leamy with our writing skills and thought up some great reasons to write letters from complaints about rabbits to invites for sleepovers.  Everyone had a different idea and we showed our skills and creativity all at the same time.

We are continuing our work looking at Mary Queen of Scots and this week focused on her early life.  We had a great drama session on Tuesday as we took on roles and recreated her early years.

Wednesday was our last day with Mrs Mooney and we created some amazing art in the form of pointillism paintings and continued our work on ‘Being Cool in School’, looking at cool responses to situations.

Next week we are going to start our trips to the library again, so any books due for the library please bring them and your card on Thursday.

Bye P4l

Class 2 loves Numeracy!

Yes, it is a fact; we are making progress in numeracy! It is not always easy. Sometimes as Caitlin says ‘It is tricky’  but we insist and then happy voices are heard:  ‘I did it on my own’, ‘I can do it’, ‘I got it’ and finally ‘I love maths’!

So counting in twos, fives and tens, vertical addition and subtraction even with regrouping are some of our accomplishments! And of course differentiated teaching helps us to reach our full potentials in our personal pace.

Favourite moment of the week was swimming for Cary, I-pad work for Jack!

And we cannot forget Miss Cameron’s visit with her sweet newborn baby. Everybody liked holding him and Aiden then came with the idea of drawing baby angry birds!

More news from us next week!

Letters To America…..

Class 3 have been continuing to find out about the crew of R.M.S. Titanic. This week we were learning about the mail clerks who worked on board. We discovered that R.M.S. stands for Royal Mail Ship and that the Titanic had been carrying more than 3000 bags of mail to America!

The Titanic had 5 mail clerks altogether, 3 American and 2 British. They worked very hard in the Mail Sorting Room, sorting more than 60,000 letters and parcels every day!

After the mail clerks had sorted the letters into bundles they put facing slips on top with their names and the destinations. We dressed up as mail clerks and made some facing slips.

Then we sorted some letters. Quite a job as they had to be filed in the correct pigeon holes according to American state!

We were very impressed that Nathan could tell us most of the American state names just from their abbreviations. Can you work out where the letters in holes AZ, FL and NY should go to?

Our thoughts on the Titanic’s mail clerks.

Jason: I liked the letter scene from the Titanic powerpoint where we got to see inside the Mail Sorting Room.

Josh: I liked doing the mail activities but if I had been on the Titanic I would have saved myself instead of trying to save the mail!

Treasure Island

This week we commenced our new topic ‘Treasure Island’.  Throughout this topic we will learn about pirates and complete related activities.  On Wednesday we made our own treasure maps!  We made them look really old by dabbing them with tea bags and leaving them to dry.  The following day we added images and symbols to our maps.  Kayleigh enjoyed this activity very much and everyone is pleased with their efforts.

We also made parrots to dislay in our classroom.  Keira had fun sticking on real feathers to her parrot image.

Have a lovely long weekend,

P1b

A very Victorian week!

This week we were learning about rich and poor Victorian Houses with Miss Clark.  We enjoyed an interactive CD ROM which helped us to see what Queen Victoria’s house looked like.  We also watched a video that showed us what a workhouse looked like.  People went to the workhouse when they were really poor and had nowhere else to live.

This week Mrs MacKenzie also handed out our Victorian Class Talk Projects.  We have to research important Victorian inventions using iPads, computers and books.  We are looking forward to sharing what we have learned.

We have also started to bring clothes and props into school to use in our Assembly about rich and poor Victorian children.  We can’t wait to show our Assembly to our families and the whole school.

Who’s raving about reading this week?

Flyn and Adam were enjoying reading a book about Dinosaurs.  They were able to tell us some fascinating facts about Velocisaurus and Velociraptors.  Flyn also wrote his own story about dinosaurs.  Well done boys!

From the Blog Post Box

“… I got better at Maths this week.”         William

This week in p2lg

This week we have learned about Chinese New Year. We watched a video showing a dragon dance and learned about the historical story of the animal race which started the 12 years in the Chinese zodiac. This year is the year of the snake. Most of our class were born in the year of the dog but Caitlin was born in the year of the pig.

We started to think about our new topic of castles. We shared what we already know about castles and thought about what we would like to learn. We also gave Mrs Gallagher some ideas about what we would like to have to play with in the classroom. She liked some of our ideas very much, especially creating a throne for our classroom.

*** Pupil of the week *** Lennox is pupil of the week this week for trying hard with his listening skills. He also impressed Mrs Gallagher with some lovely handwriting.

THE AMAZON CHALLENGE HAS BEGUN…

A mysterious chest has appeared in p7b. It is believed to have been found in the deepest part of the Amazon River. Only the bravest, most hardworking and resillient pupil will be able to complete all ten challenges and open the chest…

Lyndsay: “I enjoyed the Twinoo challenge on the Ipad and I’m getting really good at it!”

Murray: “I’m enjoying writing the 250 word essay because it’s challenging.”

Connor: “Reward 8 was really tough at first but got easier as I practised.”

Ali: “I’m enjoying doing the task book from River Reward 5 because of all the different puzzles in it.”

Jack: “I’m having to work hard for the Twinoo challenge. It’s tough to keep going but if you give up then you’ll never get there!”

Billie: “I enjoyed writing the Lost story because I made it very exciting.”

Kyle: “I’m enjoying the writing task because it is challenging.”

Adam: “I like the whole idea of doing the Amazon Challenge because it’s cool and really challenges you.”

Aqsa: “The Amazon Challenge is really addictive because you don’t want to stop until you’ve completed every part!”

Two Special Visitors!

We have been learning about people who help us.  Cody and Liam wrote to PC Arnott to ask if he would visit class 1, to tell us more about the role of a Police Officer.  We were so excited when he came to visit!

Cody’s favourite part of the visit was when PC Arnott showed us his handcuffs.  Liam noticed that PC Arnott is a very tall man and Lewis had fun talking on PC Arnott’s walkie talkie!  Lewis said ‘over and out’ when he was finished talking.

We have been learning about the different types of transport that Police Officers use.  Here we are making our very own Police station and Police car in class 1.

This week we had a visit from Miss Cameron and baby Cameron.  We were so excited!  We used gentle hands and quiet voices when  baby Cameron was in class 1.  We loved looking at baby Cameron’s tiny features.  Miss Cameron showed us how to feed the baby and we even got to hold him!  Liam counted baby Cameron’s toes.  ‘Ten tiny toes!’ said Liam.   Cody wrote about the special visit from Miss Cameron.  Cody felt great when he was holding the tiny baby.

P1g Assembly

We have now finished out Katie Morag topic. Our highlitghts have been:

– Transforming our role play area into a Post Office (Emma)

– Making a huge collage of the Isle of Struay to display on the wall (Grace)

– Learning to write postcards for delivery (Robbie)

Just a reminder that our Katie Morag assembly will be this Friday at 9.45am.

Lastly, we have collated ideas on how to transform our classroom into a Pirate theme  for our new topic which is Treasure Island. We are very excited about it! Have a look at the photo to see our spider diagram of ideas!

P3lm Egyptians

P3lm have started learning about Egyptians. Everyone is really enjoying thinking about the differences between our own lives and those in Ancient Egypt. We have even made our own mummies! Mrs Mitchell is very proud of P3lm espcially in writing lessons as each member of the class has worked so hard to think about life in Ancient Egypt and really used their imaginations to write a story entitled “My day in Ancient Egypt”. These stories were so good that 9 people were awarded Star Writers. Punctuation, adjectives and wow words were used by everyone! Well done P3lm. Keep it up!

Sport Electives

Natalie and Jennifer had exciting news to share with us this week.

On Wednesday 29th January David Carry, a famous swimmer visited Swim West Lothian Masters. David Carry is a double Commonwealth gold medallist and Olympic finalist.  His best event is the 400m freestyle.  He showed us some front crawl technique.  He also asked us what we think about when we swim.  Afterwards he showed us more technique, it really helped!  We also got his autograph and picture.

All of the swimmers including us had a fantastic time with David Carry.

Our sports electives start in a few weeks, maybe in the future a class will be writing about one of us!

Two weeks’ news!

Two weeks’ news!

Last week our classmate Liam went to Class 3 and we miss him. A new pupil, Callum, joined our class and everybody welcomed him with excitement!

Another change: in our daily programme we have increased our working with adult time.   Mrs Zaloni says we are making a remarkable progress!

Egyptians are still the topic we are focused on. So many things to learn and so many ways to do it! We have watched videos about the pyramids and the famous pharaoh Tutankhamen. We have also experienced an interactive, on line mummification process, listened to ancient Egyptian music and watched ancient Egyptian dance. We also wrote our names in hieroglyphics! What an interesting writing system!

And of course who can forget our art and sensory experiences! Building our own pyramids was just the beginning! Now we are working on our teamwork skills, working in groups and bringing again in life step by step ancient Egypt with River Nile, Sahara desert and many more things to come! Thanks Mrs Henderson for the nice creative ideas!

Classes 1, 2 and 3: Mid Week Get Together

Recently Classes 1, 2 and 3 have been having a Get Together every week in the hall.

We have been doing this on  a Wednesday morning. It is fantastic!

We begin by singing our welcome song.  It goes like this  “Welcome everybody, it’s good to see you here…. “.

Then we do a ‘Look back’ where we look at photographs on the Smartboard and think about what we have been doing over the past week.

Next we do a ‘Look forward’ where we find out about some things that will be happening soon.

The final part of the Get Together is when one person in each class gets a certificate. We all clap because these people have done so well 🙂

What we think about the Get Together.

Jason: I really like it when I get a certificate.

Geordie: I like the certificate part best as well.

Josh: I really like the certificate part and I also like the music.

Aidan: I feel really proud for the people who get the certificates.

Aidan added that he feels a bit nervous during the Welcome Song. The adults are very proud of the way his singing and actions have got more and more enthusiastic every week 🙂

In fact the adults have been extremely pleased  with how well everyone has been doing at Get Together time!

P.S. A special thank you to Jason for helping Mrs Stewart get the hall ready for Get Together every week. He does a great job!

P4a

This week we have had fun in maths with our giant coordiantes floor grid. We learnt about coordinates and played connect four!

We have painted fireworks in the footsteps of Georges Seurat. Your eyes blend the primary colours and this is called pointilism.

We also wrote a poem about shortbread using our senses, but  only after tickling our taste buds with shortbread.

Working out winning strategies.
