This week in P5b

Evie: We learned about the Day of the dead we had to read  apassage and answer questions about the passage. The Spanish name for this is Dia Los Muetros (Reece). In Mexico they make a bread of the dead called Pan de Muertos (Kayleigh). The festival starts at Halloween and they believe that the dead children and adults return to visit them during the festival (Reece).

We wrote a plan and a report about unicorns that we made (Leia).

Isla: My unicorn was called the Kelpie Unicorn, it eats gold.

P5A

Hi Everyone!

We have been busy navigating our way around Didbook this week in preparation for us using it to record our learning journey.  We are excited about all the different things we can put on it, and will be using it this year instead of our Profile Jotters.

Next week we are off to Low Port and we have been talking about what it will be like, what we will be learning and of course, the best clothes to wear to the disco!  An important reminder that on the Monday all children should bring their own packed lunch but Tuesday and Wednesdays are provided. We also asked Mrs Aitken a few questions we had –

We  should not bring technologies – no devices of any kind.

We can bring a hairdrier but not straigtening irons.

We do not need sweets for nighttime.

We meet at the shelter for 9am – the children know where abouts!

Growth Mindset in P5B

This week 5B was set a challenge.

Our challenge was to fold a rectangular bit of paper into this shape. We had two rules we were not allowed to touch the model and you only got one piece of paper. We had work in teams of 6 and we had ten minutes to figure it out.

blog-picture

After just three minutes some of the class said

“it’s impossible”

“how does it go together”

Logan: after the 10 minutes I felt frustrated because

Aaron: I was glad it was over.

Ben: I felt Mr Cunningham was using magic.

Freddie: I felt proud of myself for getting quite close.

After the ten minutes was up the class was asked if they had a growth mindset. We all thought that we did. We were surprised to find out that we said such negative things in a short space of time.

Then we made posters of phrases and words that made us feel really good and proud of ourselves. The words that meant the most were the biggest.

Reece (who missed this) I am glad to be back at school and I am glad to see all my friends and teachers. img_1007

P5A

This week we learned all about William Wallace and the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Did you know that all his army wore yellow tunics not tartan ones? They rubbed plants on the their tunics to dye them. Also the Scots outwitted the English bu using great tactics, they won even although the English had many more cavalrymen than the Scots.

We also wrote newspaper reports on the battle during writing, and learned about the features of a newspaper.

In H&W we learned about having a growth mindset – feel free to ask us about it!

Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

P5A

Thanks to everyone who came along to meet the teacher – we had lots of positive feed back and just a wee reminder on Class Dojo – we are not using it at the moment, but are instead using our peg system which the children came up with.  Everyone starts the week with 5 minutes Golden Time and earns a further five minutes each day. When a pupil’s behaviour choice is deemed inappropriate they are given a warning and move their peg to challenge that choice. They are given support in class to improve.  If they choose not to improve then they move another peg and don’t earn that days Golden Time.  Everyone with complete Golden Times earns a sticker for our Golden Club.

We have had a busy week with getting our photos taken, attending p7 assembly and welcoming Mrs Dunbar who came into our class to get to know us. We also found out about a man called William Wallace and how he became involved in the SWOI.

NB PLEASE REMEMBER TO RETURN THE GREEN FORM AND THE BEHAVIOUR CONTRACT IF YOUR CHILD IS GOING TO LOWPORT.

P5B

This week in P5B we have been learning about the Scottish wars of independence.

Evan: we have learned John Balliol and Alexander III and the Scottish wars of independence.

Ben and Emma: Alexander III fell off his horse and died.

Dadirayi: Alexander III only had one granddaughter and she was Margret the Maid of Norway.

Emma: She was arranged to marry Edward II who was Edward I son.

Kayleigh: We learned that Alexander III wife died in childbirth.

Annabelle: Alexander III was born on the 4th September 1241.

Leia: he fell off a cliff with his horse, broke his neck and died.

In our literacy lessons

Annabelle: In our writing we made superheroes.

Charlie: we wrote instructions on how to defeat superheroes.

Mya: We swapped with a partner, first we made our own superhero then swapped and planned how to defeat our friends hero.

Emma: My superhero was a horse with wings.

We also wanted to mention that

All P5 that are going to Lowport are looking forward to it ALOT!!!!

PS

In 5B we are using Class Dojo as our system to gain entry to the golden club. To earn a step takes 10 points so for entry to the golden club you need 50 points! After that we are aiming to gain entry to the 100 club which is a VIP party at the end of the term that only people with 100 points or more can get in to. I will send log in details home for you to see your child’s account. I will not however be responding to any messages sent via the messaging service.

P5 has been fab!

Lowport was my highlight. At Beecraigs someone fell in the burn which made me laugh!

I enjoyed going to New Lanark and learning about The Victorians.

By Noah

We have lots of great memories from our time in P5b:

  • The fantastic trips to Lowport and New Lanark.
  • The special days such as the Victorian School Day and the Afternoon Tea Party.
  • The highly competitive Home Team Challenges.
  • The enthusiastic clean ups following Chocolate Geology lessons!
  • The amazing Class Talks where we saw your confidence grow.
  • The wonderful discussions we’ve had on so many fascinating subjects from ‘how life began on Earth’ to events happening in the world today.

The very first time we met, at Meet the Teacher Day, we guessed that the ‘b’ in P5b stood for ‘brilliant’ – looks like we were right!

Have a wonderful holiday and don’t forget to say hello when you see us next year!

All the best,

Mrs McClafferty and Mrs Mackenzie 🙂 🙂

The Battle of Evolution – P5b

This week we entered our newly discovered species into The Battle of Evolution. It was a mighty struggle for survival which ended in extinction for many. The environmental factors we had to face were harsh:

Ice Ages wiped out thin, hairless creatures.

Global Warming was a nightmare for our furry, bulky species.

Dangerous Predators were a real threat for those with short legs (although stripes and spots came in handy for camouflage!)

Tall Plants growing in the area provided a great food supply – but only for those that could reach them.

Pity help you if your species were dwindling when the Meteor struck – there really was no escape from that!

In the end, only the fittest survived:

Robyn’s Pandiraf Tobin’s Elabutterfoot and Skye’s Elebatnormouser
Robyn’s Pandiraf
Tobin’s Elabutterfoot and
Skye’s Elebatnormouser

Their species were diverse enough to survive and thrive in their ever-changing environment.

It has been a fun and fascinating way to discover how species have evolved over time and really makes us appreciate all the amazing creatures we share Planet Earth with. What a Wonderful World!

P5b Meet The Teacher!

Health and Fitness Focus in P5b

This week we completed our latest Home Team Challenge where we had to design a ‘healthy’ town. We had to consider sports and fitness activities we would like to offer as well as think about the type of shops and restaurants we would include in our town. We also developed healthy ways of travelling between the various areas such as cycle tracks, scooter trails etc.

It was a tight competition, but in the end both Healthy High and Sportsville were honoured with the ‘Healthy Town’ award.

P5b Read Their Way To The Future!

This week we have a visitor in our class. His name is Alistair and he’s a pupil at Linlithgow Academy. Alistair is visiting Balbardie for his Work Experience as he is considering a career in teaching. This made us think about the type of work we might like to do in the future. Stacey thinks she might be a vet, Greig would like to be a mechanic, Katya is interested in being a Youtuber while Katie would love to be a hairdresser. We all look forward to visiting the wonderful café that Michelle and Darja plan to open!

Whatever the future holds for us we know that being confident readers will help us on our journey. We have been encouraging our classmates to read as much as they can by conducting Rave Reviews on books we have enjoyed. We then put these books into a Book Share so that they can be enjoyed by everyone. So far it’s proving very successful!

English and Literacy

This week in English we were focussing on note-taking. We had to read a passage in pairs and then make notes under subheadings and did very well with this task! We now know that notes are used to record information quickly and use key words, rather than full sentences.

We then applied our knowledge of note-taking when we began to create a fact file of our own new species of animal. We selected appropriate subheadings: habitat, diet, description, and then took notes under these headings. These notes helped us when we began to design a leaflet on our new animal and had to write out our notes in sentences.

We are really enjoying the book that we are reading together in class: ‘Rat Burger’ by David Walliams. We get through about a chapter per day and love to make predictions about what might happen next in the story! We are also developing our summarising skills when Miss Brown asks us to explain what has happened in the story so far!

Pupil comments:

Alanna – I liked making the leaflets and drawing our new species on the front of the leaflet.

Ty – I am enjoying our class book, it’s full of suspense!

Maths and Numeracy

This week we have been making connections between our previous learning of fractions and our new topic of percentages. We now know that the whole amount of anything is recognised as 100%. We have been looking at equivalent percentages and working out fraction, percentage and decimal conversions.   Next week we will move onto finding the percentage of an amount using various strategies.

Pupil comments:

Sophie – I didn’t realise how many things used percentages, like in shops and when downloading music. It has been fun to learn about percentages!

Tom – I found maths quite tricky this week but I think it will get easier as I learn more.

LATC Topic

We have been continuing with our topic ‘What a wonderful world.’ This week we have been learning about food chains! We have been classifying animals into different groups: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, and working out what animals eat and if this makes them predators or prey.

We have also been following the progress of our caterpillars which have now turned into chrysalids! We have moved them into a netted enclosure so that they can continue to grow and eventually turn into butterflies. We have found this process very exciting to monitor each day!

105_2933

Pupil Comments:

Lucy – I didn’t know how caterpillars made their chrysalid themselves and enjoyed watching this happen.

Zoe – I found it interesting to learn about food chains and what animals eat other animals!

Have a great weekend everyone!

P5b Learn Across The Curriculum

This week we have been exploring the scientific theory of how life on Earth began:

  • It all began with The Big Bang!
  • Earth was a lifeless ball of lava.
  • Over billions of years the lava cooled and water formed on Earth.
  • The first cells formed in tidal pools – life on Earth had begun!
  • These living cells created oxygen.
  • Multi-cell creatures developed, first in the sea, then moving onto land.
  • Life on Earth has evolved to include so many species – including us!IMG_0950[1]

In RME we learned about the Christian creation story. We used a collage effect to create dioramas depicting the seven days in the story.

dioramas

We found it very interesting to see that the sequence of events between the scientific theory and the Christian creation story were very similar.

From the Blog Post Box:

I’m getting better at…

…running because I have been practising.            Katie

…eating fruit.     Mark

…shooting goals in hockey.         Kamron

…doing more active activities at home and less inactive things.                   Michelle

…using my Maths Journal to master the 7 times table.    Tobin

…my golf. I can hit 150 yards with my 7 iron. My golf teacher, Lewis, said ‘WOW!’             Archie

English and Literacy

This week in English we were working in pairs to complete a reading comprehension on a written passage.  We had to use lots of different skills to do this, including finding evidence in the passage to back up our opinions, and using our ‘context clues’ to work out the meaning of tricky words.

We have also been working on developing our writing skills and were writing about the long weekend.  We had to remember to include capital letters, punctuation and paragraphs.  Some of us used ‘wow’ words to impress Miss Brown!

Ty – I enjoyed the reading exercise, it was really fun but tricky as well.

Lucy – Doing our writing regularly is helping me to improve!

Maths and Numeracy

In Maths this week we have been working on fractions word problems, which we found a bit tricky at first but we were beginning to understand be the end of the week.  We can now simplify basic fractions and find a fraction of a quantity.   We are still enjoying the game ‘Exterminate’ and ask to play it in every maths lesson!

On Thursday we did something exciting in maths!  We had 5 different stations and 15 minutes at each station.   There was an ICT station with a game which required us to use our division strategies, and a fractions card game to improve our speed and accuracy.  There was also a ‘Mild, spicy, Hot’ station where we got to choose the difficulty of our fractions worksheet and give ourselves a challenge!

Rhia – I’ve really enjoyed division, I think the games are helping me with this.

Lennox – I’ve really enjoyed doing fractions, especially simplifying fractions!

LATC Topic

We have found our topic very interesting this week as we have been learning all about evolution and what animal characteristics help them best to survive! We have discussed the kinds of things that can lead to an animal’s extinction, such as other competition and changing climates.  We have identified the features of animals that help them to survive, adapt and reproduce within a natural environment.

As part of this week’s topic, we really enjoyed creating our brand new species of animal!  Firstly we designed our animal, thinking carefully about how it would look like and what colour it would be.  We then labelled our new species, identifying the features we had given it that would help it to survive in its habitat.

We have also been monitoring the progress of our classroom experiments – we have been growing runner beans and recording our observations.  We are always very excited to see how they are growing every morning!  Our other experiment has been watching our tiny caterpillars get bigger and bigger.  We are looking forward to them changing into chrysalis’ and eventually butterflies!

Abbie – I really enjoyed creating our species this week and combing different features of animals.

Lucie – I have learned about evolution and how animals can become extinct.

Have a great weekend everyone!
