Literacy Learning at Allan’s

We have a robust and progressive framework for teaching of literacy across each stage in the school, empowering children to develop as confident readers and writers from early language acquisition to developing reading fluency, to interrogating themes, main ideas and finding information across a range of texts.

P1-3

In our infant classes we develop our learners’ knowledge of sounds using the  structured, progressive approach of Read Write Inc.  We use ‘Fred Talk’ to break down words into their sounds, helping us to read confidently and with increasing fluency. Throughout Read Write Inc, children are introduced to new sounds and increasingly more advanced stories, as well as tricky ‘Red’ words.  Children in P1-3 also use Read Write Inc to help to develop their knowledge of spelling patterns and rules!

P4-7

Our Primary 4-7 classes focus on developing their confidence and competence as active readers. We learn and use the 6 Active Literacy skills to help us to make meaning from the novels we read. These strategies are:

  • Activating Prior Knowledge
  • Summarising
  • Visualising
  • Metalinguistics
  • Identifying the Main Idea
  • Drawing Inferences

We use a range of exciting new group novels to help to develop enthusiastic, engaged readers!

P4-7 use the Nessy Spelling programme to develop their knowledge of spelling patterns and rules. We are so lucky to have access to Nessy Online, allowing our learners to watch engaging animations and play exciting spelling games both in school and at home!
