Monday’s Storybook and Activity Idea – Watch Out There’s a Monster About – Support Emotional Understanding

Hello Everyone,

Here is the storybook Watch Out There’s a Monster About written by Claire Freedman read by Nicole. One wild and windy night, there’s a knock at the door. What was that? Owl, Mouse and Rabbit are frightened. Is the Monster of the Woods outside? But they’ve forgotten some important things. Not all monsters are scary. Some monsters are quite shy. And some cute monsters just want to play!

Suggested Activity …

  • Start by looking at the cover – how do you think the characters on the front are feeling? Why?
  • Together talk through all the features of the Monster of the Woods. What are his eyes like? His mouth and teeth? His skin? His arms, hands, ears and legs? Has he just got? This will support your child to develop their ability to use descriptive words, which will enhance their literacy skills.
  • What kind of noises did the Monster make when he was knocking on Owl’s door? Why did they decide to open the door in the end? Was the Monster of the Woods as scary as they had expected? – Encouraging your child to discuss parts of the story will support their comprehension skills and will encourage them to use higher order thinking skills to retell parts of the story.

Next Steps …

  • Can you have a discussion with your child about times they have experiences different emotions and feelings like the characters within the story.
  • Can you encourage your child to mark make an image of choice and to use descriptive language to describe parts of their image.
  • Encourage your child to read you the story using their memory recall and the pictures within the story as visual aids.
