Tuesday’s Storybook and Activity Idea – The Gruffalo – Explore Natural Environment Outdoors

Hello Everyone,  here is the storybook the Gruffalo written by the author Julia Donaldson, read by Gill. A mouse walks through the wood and encounters predators (first a fox, then an owl, and finally a snake). Each of these animals, clearly intending to eat the mouse and invite him to their home for a meal. The cunning mouse declines each offer and uses clever tricks to avoid danger. He tells each animal that he plans to dine with his friend, a “Gruffalo”; a monstrous creature whose frightening features he describes. He tells them the Gruffalo’s favourite food is the relevant animal. Frightened that the Gruffalo might eat them, each animal flees.

Suggested Activity …

  • Go for a walk in the woods and encourage your child to discuss what creatures they see with their eyes. You might see a Gruffalo.
  • Bake your own crumble. Use the internet to search with your child and choose the ingrediants you wish to use to bake a crumble!
  • You and your child could create your own animals from the story using everyday junk that is lying around the house for example toilet roll tubes, kitchen roll tubes, cereal boxes, empty plastic bottles etc.

Next steps …

  • Use the internet to research animals and insects you came across in the woods, further developing ICT skills and knowledge of living creatures.
  • Try different fruits in the crumble, discuss likes and dislikes or use the internet to find different recipes to bake for e.g. cookies!
