Mrs Fleming and Primary 1/2
Children are experiencing a play-based learning environment which includes social, creative, writing and technology zones as well as an outdoor area when weather permits. They are working hard whilst also honing their independent and exploratory skills.
Literacy
In Literacy, we will be using the “Active Literacy” programme to develop our phonics and enhance our reading and writing. Children will also be creating their own stories using Talk for Writing.
Primary 1 have started to learn their initial sounds which will include s, a, t, p, I, n, r, m, d and e. They will sing their sounds, identify the sounds within words, find words containing the sounds and learn to form the letters correctly.
Primary 2 are revising the digraphs that they were introduced to at the end of Primary 1 before moving onto new sounds. These include ch, sh, th, wh, ng, ph, ee, oo, ck, ai, oy and oa. The children will continue to use active strategies to learn these but there will be a bigger emphasis on sentence creation and using them in context.
It is so beneficial for children at this age to practise their sounds, reading and tricky words on a daily basis and I really hope you can assist me with this. There will also be an emphasis on writing more neatly so please encourage this at home.
Maths
Primary 1 are learning all about the numbers to 10. I have put a folder on Google Classroom which shows the rhymes we use when learning to form our numbers.
Primary 2 are starting to manipulate their numbers within 20, recognising, writing and counting. They will also start to add and subtract numbers within this range.
As well as looking at number all children will also focus on discrete areas including 2D shape and pattern – hopefully with an outdoor focus! The children also have regular sessions each week to reinforce their mental maths strategies.
Inter Disciplinary Learning
This term the children are exploring The Colour Monster which we are using to introduce our Emotions work programme. We will also be getting out and about to discover signs of Autumn.
PE Days will be Wednesdays and Fridays. Please send children to school on those days with kits and clothes that they can independently get in and out of.
This term I will be posting all homework on the Google Classroom stream on a Monday for completion by the Friday. I will give suggested days for each task, but I totally understand that sometimes things happen. That is why you will be given the week to complete all tasks.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at Parents’ Night this term.
