The Sky Zero and WWF Seagrass Project

Authors: Ruby Banks and Cammy Shaw

Yesterday, we went to the Green Zone at COP26 and saw the Sky Zero and WWF exhibition for the Seagrass project. Every plant used in the exhibition will be planted so there will be no waste.

What Is Seagrass?

Seagrass is the only plant that grows flowers that can live underwater. It grows in underwater fields, increasing the biodiversity (lots of varied plants and animals) of the ocean. Seagrass is also a habitat for fish and aids to purify the seas. It can take in and store carbon more than 35 times faster than rainforests. Seagrass is less than 0.1% of the sea floor, but it stores 10-18% of the carbon held in the ocean.

The UK’s Seagrass Is In Danger

Pollution, the developments of coasts and boat engines have destroyed 75,000 meadows of seagrass, losing over 92% of the UK’s seagrass.

Sky Zero and WWF’s Partnership To Save Seagrass

Sky Zero and WWF are putting in great efforts to restore the seagrass meadows. Last year, they planted over 1 million seeds and created the UK’s first restored seagrass meadow. They plan to expand the project and plant nurseries for seagrass seeds and use advanced technology to get seagrass meadows restored all around the UK.

How can you get involved?

“Become a force of nature.”

For every 1,000 signatures SKy Zero and WWF will plant 4000 seagrass seeds that will trap carbon.
