Fridays For Future – Purpose and Aims
By Cameron Sweeney and Kieran Hunter
“You are never too small to make a difference!” – Greta Thunberg
Fridays For Future is a youth led organised movement which began in August 2018, when Greta Thunberg and other youth activists sat outside the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks to protest the little action taken on the climate crisis.
The Fridays For Future organisation fights for the future of everyone around the globe as they believe that swift action must be taken to address the climate crisis.
Each month, students from around the world take to the streets to demand that politicians do more to recognise, and act upon the inevitability (certain to happen) and dangers of climate change. These marches have attracted more than one million young people in more than 100 countries.
The organisation currently:
- Has 14 million members from all over the globe
- Is present in over 7,500 cities
- Has members present in every continent
The organisation has a list of demands in relation to the climate crisis. These demands are as follows:
- Keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees celsius
- Ensure climate justice and equity (fairness- benefits all equally)
- Listen to the best united science currently available
- Follow the Paris agreement
In June, Thunberg and the Fridays for Future movement were honoured with Amnesty International’s Ambassador Of Conscience Award, which recognises people who have shown great leadership and courage in standing up for human rights.
