What is YOUNGO?
by Jonathan Gamble
YOUNGO are attending the COP26 event and have spoken this afternoon, highlighting what they stand for and who they are as an organisation.
WHO IS YOUNGO?
They are the oldest and largest youth constituency body in the United Nations. The group works throughout the entire world to represent children everywhere.
Committed to giving young people a voice on the world stage in order to give them equal opportunity to have their say when discussing climate change.
WHAT IS THEIR MISSION?
The group works to spread awareness and knowledge on the issue of climate change to children and young people. They plan to do this by urging world governments to incorporate “climate education” into their schools’ learning curriculums.
They strive to advocate for policy to be put in place to ensure young people are represented fully when discussing climate change on the highest levels.
While youth representation is a key aspect of the group’s mission, equally they are also striving for a climate positive society.
WHAT’S THEIR PLAN?
The Global Youth Statement is a document which YOUNGO has worked on tirelessly. The document surrounds the views of young people around the world on how they themselves want to see their governments act in response to the climate emergency. 40,000 children and young people were asked to have their opinions taken when creating the document. This document will be taken to COP26 by the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon. She will then present it to world leaders attending the conference and urge them to take notice and action.
