Cars, Planes, Bikes… How Does Transport Affect Climate Change?
So, why is transport so important when we talk about climate change?
The different choices of transport we use in our everyday lives all have varying impacts on the planet. This is because some modes of transport cause more pollution than others. This means they release harmful gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air, which cause an increase in the world’s temperature. This rise in temperature causes climate change.
Okay, so which modes of transport are best for the planet?
The best modes of transport include walking and cycling. This is because they do not involve the release of any harmful gases. They are also very good for you! The next best choice is public transport, like trains or buses. Think of it like this: if 30 people took their own car to work, the carbon released would be far more than if these 30 people got on 1 bus. This is because the gas released by 1 bus is far less than that of 30 cars. So, less carbon dioxide is put into the air.
So what can I do to help?
You can help by encouraging family and friends to take the most environmentally friendly modes of transport and limit the amount they use their cars. Challenging them to take part in competitions such as ‘walk to school week’ and ‘beat the street’ will make them want to get involved. This will help fight climate change and save our planet!
