COP26: What will happen this week?

Race to Zero accelerates ahead of COP26 - Fleet Alliance

Day 1: November 1st

Meet the Politicians

At the start of the day there will be a world leader summit, where leaders will come together to discuss how they can address climate change. Boris Johnson (British Prime Minister), Joe Biden (American President) and Scott Morrison (Australian Prime Minister) will all be in attendance as well as many other influential leaders.

However, leaders like Vladimir Putin (Russian President) and Xi Jingping (Chinese President) will not be attending the summit despite being large contributors to climate change.

Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chairman of the African Union, also chose to not attend. This could be due to the fact that Africa has not received much Covid-19 relief or aid from other more well developed countries. “Africa is tired of waiting.”

Day 2: November 2nd

Leaders’ Summit

There will be a continuation of the summit held on day one. This could possibly include deeper discussions on ways to stop climate change. There may be very little results but there will be many ideas brought to the table and shared amongst leaders and other important figures.

Day 3: November 3rd

Finance

On day three, there will be conversations on ways to finance these ideas produced on the first and second days. Discussions include ways to finance developing nations to fight climate change and also ways that developed countries can fund big changes themselves.

Day 4: November 4th

Green Energy

This is when the discussions on how renewable and sustainable energy will be introduced into a modern and fuel dependent world. This discussion will help the public know more about what is expected of them individually.

Of course it is easy enough if you are a multi million dollar company, but for the general public, reusable energy is not practical or accessible near enough affordable as of yet.

Day 5: November 5th

Youth Protests

There will be a protest by the Youth and Public Empowerment led by Greta Thunburg in order to voice young people’s opinions on climate change and to push world leaders to start change. This is also part of Greta’s Fridays for Future Scotland.

Her idea is a “school strike for climate justice” which will hopefully help to raise more awareness and make a cause for immediate action. There is an estimated 8000 participants and it begins at 11:30am, starting from Kelvingrove Park and ending in George Square.

Day 6: November 6th

Protests

There will be a bigger protest on the Saturday. This is estimated to have about 50,000 participants and it is fighting for “just and fair solutions to climate change.”

This will place pressure on the people that are trying to come to agreements during the second week of COP26. There are 20 other protests similar to this one going on in countries around the world.
