Smoking

Today we had a visit from Jill Hood, Health Improvement Officer. We learned about the dangers of smoking.

We got to have a look at some of the chemicals in cigarettes. These include

  • tar – which you find on the road
  • nicotine – which is addictive
  • butane – which is found in lighter fluid
  • ammonia – which is found in toilet cleaner
  • lead – which is found in roof tiles

as well as many more dangerous chemicals.

We also got to see a healthy lung and that of a smoker — the difference was huge!!!

Children in Need – Times Table-tastic!

We’ve had a brilliant day fundraising for Children in Need. The primary 7s had some fantastic stalls set up and in our class we had a sponsored times table-athon!

Each time the whistle blew throughout the day, we had to stop our work and take part in a times table challenge – playing Beat my Score and Hit the Button. Altogether, in Primary 5A, we raised £159.62 and we answered 3761 times table questions correctly!!!

Learning about alcohol

Today Jill Hood came in to our class to talk to us about alcohol. She is a Health Improvement Officer.

We learned:

Kealan – alcohol can be bad for you. It can make you act differently.

Chenet – it takes one hour for a unit of alcohol to leave our body

Peter – three things which could have alcohol in them are beer, wine and vodka

Lauree-Ann – children shouldn’t drink alcohol. Adults shouldn’t drink too much.

Michael – you need to be 18 before you can drink alcohol

Jenna – you need to have proof that you are 18 to buy alcohol

Theo – nine out of ten adults drink alcohol

Jed – more than 100 people die each year from alcohol

Michael – alcohol can make you sick

The picture below shows the effect of drinking alcohol on our bodies.

Dogs Against Drugs Visit

Today we had a visit from Michael Coutts from Dogs Against Drugs.

He brought with him a lot of equipment which we got to try on.

He also let us try on handcuffs.

We also got to meet Blade, a trained drugs dog.

We learned a lot and really enjoyed the visit. Thank you!

WE Movement Assembly

We had an assembly yesterday with a visitor from the WE Movement, Alex Monk.

Lauree-Ann – I enjoyed the assembly!

Kealan – We learned that we can change the world by a little action!

Chenet – We need to be nice to each other and listen

Peter – We can be anything we want to be. Just like in the Lego Movie

Jenson – The man had been to Africa and built a school there

Happy Halloween!

We have had a spook-tacular day today! Some of us dressed up.

We started our day by creating a pumpkin. We took it in turn to draw the features which Miss McIntyre cut out at break time. We got the chance to try pumpkin if we wanted. Not all of us were very sure about it!! Here are some photos:

We shared some of our favourite Halloween jokes. Here are a selection:

When do vampires fall in love? Love at first bite.

Why didn’t the skeleton go to the disco? He had noone to go with.

What is a ghost’s favourite food? Ice SCREAM!!

We ended the day with a party and saw which team could make the best zombie. All four looked super!

Northumberland Music Extravaganza!

Today we were lucky to see a concert by visiting musicians from Northumberland. They travelled up on a bus called Travelsure. The bus driver was really cool and gave us high fives!

There were lots of instruments, including a drum which looked like a fridge. There were also fiddles, a mandolin, a harp, a guitar, a flute, Northumberland small pipes and a cello.

We thought the concert was good and epic. We hope they can come back again!

A big thank you to our photographer for the event – James!

Happy birthday and Happy holidays

Today we sang happy birthday to Jed and Kealan who both have birthdays in the holidays. We can sing the song in French as well as English. Maybe after the holidays we will add another language to this.

Here is a photo of them both with their cards!

We hope everyone has a super holiday!

Space Food

Today we learned what it is like to be an astronaut. We watched a video from when Tim Peake was on the International Space Station and tried astronaut food!

Here is what we thought!

Lauree-Ann – It was really good!

Isaac – It was amazingly awesome!

Ella – It was exciting eating it and it was also really good.

Jed – It tasted like real ice cream

Jenson – It was really wierd to taste

Theo – It was disgusting!!

Michael – It was disgusting.

Erin – It smelled like marshmallows and it tasted wierd.

Mark – I didn’t like it.

Kealan – It was awesomely tastingly awesome!!

Peter – The flavours were simply divine

Chenet – It tasted wierd. I don’t normally taste something that smells like marshmallows and taste like meringue.

Kaylee – It was good.

As you can see – our opinions were very mixed.
