P5 – Term 4 – 2425

At the end of Term 3, we had a lovely surprise!  The service users at E.T. and Taing House have been busy making beautiful bunnies for the class.  Mrs Friendlander delivered them.  As a thank you, we made Easter cards.  We’ve had so much fun visiting and keeping in touch with the staff and service users.  It’s great to be a part of the wider community.  We hope to visit again in Term 4.

As part of our learning in our Numeracy Project on ‘Time – Calendars’, the whole class achieved their targets and joined the ‘100 Club’ and we celebrated by doing a conga through the school.  Primary 3 joined us, as well as some of the canteen ladies.  It was fun!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our class museum at the end of Term 3.  It was great to see everybody and have the opportunity to share our learning and exhibits, as well as the beautiful songs we’ve been practising with Miss Stewart.  The juice and cupcakes/chocolate crispies went down a treat.  Thank you to Alison for sharing the canteen and helping make the tabnabs and Mrs Manson for helping in the afternoon.  We raised £78.97 for the R.N.L.I.  Thank you so much for the donations!  We used our creative and communication meta skills.  It was a splendid afternoon!       

The children shared some of their thoughts:

“I felt excited for my mam coming.  She liked our singing.  She also liked the crisps and juice!  I was proud of all my work and I used my creativity meta skills”.

“My mam and dad liked the thunder maker and I liked the cupcakes!”

“I really liked it because it was all of our creations and my dad liked it.”

“My dad loved the Shetland Bus bit.”

“My dad and mum thought it was so amazing how we did all this.  We also used our creative meta skills.”

“My mam and dad said it was very good and they were impressed that we did all of that work and really liked it.”

“My mum loved it and she thought the singing and instrumental part was great”.  Plus my dad liked the wordsearch I did.”

“I was really proud of myself.”

“It was very fun seeing our parents looking at our work.”

We’ve been learning to estimate and measure the capacity of vessels/objects.  We used our collaborative and communicative meta skills; working in pairs/groups to estimate and measure the capacity of various vessels/objects.

Over the last three weeks of Term 3, we were fortunate that Izzy could join us and guide us in drama workshops.  We invited the other classes in the senior wing to watch our performance.  Thank you Izzy!  We used our creative and collaborative meta skills.  We had so much fun!

We have been doing athletics in PE.   We spoke about athletics being made up of three events, running, jumping and throwing.  We only had three weeks of the term left and only managed to do running and jumping activities.  We will hopefully do throwing after the holidays.  We were lucky to be outside on our running week, having a good amount of room to develop speed.  We loved the hurdles activities and the standing long jump over chalk figure of ourselves.

As part of our leadership on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), we designed floating vessels using only tinfoil.  The challenge was to see which design worked best and how many cubes could the vessels hold (cargo) without sinking.

We used our counting skills and some of the class re-designed their vessels to hold more cargo and stay afloat longer.  We collated our results and following discussion, vessels with higher sides worked best and those with thicker layers of foil.  Cube cargoes ranged from 12 to 680!

We also used our critical thinking and creative meta skills.

The activity was exciting, fun, fantastic, interesting, creative, teamwork, incredible, amazing, amusing, inspiring and hard.

We visited the Lerwick Fish Market and NAFC Scalloway, as part of our inter-disciplinary learning this term.

We used our curiosity and communication meta skills.  We had a lot of fun!
