Shetland wool and makkin (knitting) are very important parts of our heritage, especially Fair Isle patterns.

Our pupils had a great time learning how to card and spin Shetland wool into yarn, taught by the amazing Kathleen. We all had a great time learning about this important part of our heritage.

We also had the best time on our school trip to the Shetland Wool Brokers. Thank-you so much to Oliver and Sandra and everyone at the wool broker for making it so enjoyable.

We learned what happens to the wool from arriving at the wool brokers to ending up on the shelves in the shop. The children got to see how the wool is weighed and graded. Oliver explained how they grade the wool and showed examples of each grade. We learned how important Shetland wool is and how it is some of the finest wool in the world. Our ancestors certainly needed it to survive the harsh Shetland winters!
