Visit from Dr Angus

Thomas’s mum came into school to show us some under the sea things for our topic. She works at the fisheries college and she is a marine biologist so she knows lots about stuff that’s under the sea. She showed us some fish that had been dried out on a heater. The fish were in plastic boxes so that they didn’t get squished and broken. We looked at fish otoliths they are fish ear bones. We learned how to tell how old fish are and how many winters they’ve had. If you look at their fish bones you can see lines, the more lines the older the fish are. We learned how deep different fish can go. If fish have lights on their head they live in really deep water nearly where the seabed is. We liked the presentation with lots of cool pictures of different things like crabs, lobsters, baby lobsters, sea en enemies. It was fun and really good, we loved having Thomas’s mum in teaching us.

Mairianne’s Presentation

My presentation was on Uyea. Uyea has been in my family for nearly 100 years. Uyea is a jewel of a place and its got da soond o da isle, its very popular for people to come and look at it. At home I made a poster all about Uyea, I got some photos off the internet and some from my Grandad that owns Uyea. On the map it shows you all the names and I’ve walked over all of that and I know the places off by heart. The jug in the photo is my great great grandad Alex’s jug, he used to milk da coos and carry the milk jug around with him and its nearly 100 years old. Now my mam has it, it stays in a glass cabinet in wir hoose. Its very special to me. My presentation went very good, I enjoyed it and would do it again. It made me feel much more confident. We are going to do another presentation next term.

Thomas’ Presentation

I took some of my LEGO to school. On the computer I had some photos of my LEGO I made at home and on the computer there was one funny bit. There was one called the portaloo because the driver in the truck went too fast and the door went flying open so you could see the guy. I liked doing my presentation because LEGO is my favourite thing. I was happy because I showed the bulldozer.

Vaila’s Presentation

My presentation was about my sheep Margee. She is 14 years old she eats bread and biscuits. This year she had a baby I named her star. I took Margee and star to school in our trailer and we had fun at school feeding Margee rich tea biscuits. She is a very very old sheep but she is my favourite sheep in the whole entire world.

Working under the sea!

Today we had a visitor in school, Mark came to talk to us about his job. He is a scuba diver! He brought in all his equipment to show us. We really enjoyed hearing all about his job, it sounds very fun. We also got to see some amazing pictures that Mark’s friend took when they were exploring around Shetland.

Purple cakes for CLAN!

We baked purple cakes to raise money for CLAN! Our favourite was the purple layers cake, we started by adding a peerie bit of purple food colouring then we added more for each layer. We added lots to the bottom layer to make it dark purple. We cut out purple decorations for our cakes. One of the cakes we made was for a ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition. Scott’s mum guessed the closest weight so she won the cake!

We have been learning about GIRFEC and our health and wellbeing.

We need to be supported in school to be:

– responsible

– healthy

– achieving

– included

– respected

– safe

– nurtured

– active

Then we can be supported to grow and develop and reach our full potential.

School Trip to Mareel and The Shetland Museum

We had a great time on our school trip to Mareel and The Shetland Museum. At Mareel we watched a film called ‘Song of the Sea’, it was about a Selkie. We loved the film, we are going to be writing our own imaginative stories about a Selkie. When we went to the museum we had a guided tour to learn about the importance of the sea to Shetland. After we looked around the museum we got to make peerie boats using different materials, it was so fun!

Aboard the Altaire!

We visited the Altaire to learn about the Shetland Fishing Industry as part of our topic. We were shown around by one of the crew who told us lots about fishing. We had a fantastic day! We enjoyed going on a school trip in our local community, the Altaire is not far from our school.
