Shoe Box Appeal 2016

img_1935

We had a visitor in school yesterday. A volunteer from the charity Blythswood came in to tell us all about the shoe box appeal. Every year Blythswood take shoe boxes filled with gifts to people living in poverty all over Europe and Pakistan. The Blythswood target this year is to fill 150,000 boxes! We’re going to help by filling boxes in school for boys and girls that are similar ages to us.

Message in a Bottle

We’ve been writing letters to post back to the person that sent a message in a bottle from Faroe. The message in a bottle was found on the Sand Voe beach in North Roe. We typed up our letters on the laptops and inserted pictures of North Roe and the Sand Voe beach.

Sitting Bull

Primary 3-7 were given the challenge of working as part of a group to research the life of a famous Native American. Thomas and Scott decided they wanted to find out more about Sitting Bull. He was a famous Plains Indian and Chief of the Sioux Tribe who fought for the rights of the Native Americans. Thomas and Scott used the internet and information books to research the life of Sitting Bull, they created this great poster and used it when sharing their learning with the rest of the class. Well done Scott and Thomas. 🙂IMG_1907IMG_1911

Geronimo

Mairianne, John and Ardan worked as a team to find out about the famous Native American Geronimo. Geronimo lived a very eventful life trying to preserve the Native American way of life from being destroyed. The group were very creative with how they presented information on their poster, the timeline was a great idea. Mairianne, John and Ardan presented the information they researched to the rest of the class, they did a fantastic job! 🙂

Native American Symbols

We have been creating stories set in the Wild West using Native American symbols to record our stories. We chose Native American names for ourselves, we were the main characters in our stories. Here is Robbie with his story. His Native American name is Rowtag Bidzil which means ‘He is strong fire’.

My native American name is Chumani Kanti, it means Sing Dewdrops. In my story we live in the desert, me and my friend sleep in the tepee when we wake up we go hunt buffalo. We found some horse tracks they belonged to the cowboys. War broke out and we had to go back to camp for help. I was happy when me and my friend got back to the desert Indian camp we lit a fire and everything was good and peaceful.

Mai Nadie – Wise Coyote

My Native American name is Mai Nadie which means Wise Coyote. In the beginning of my story I was happy in my Indian camp with my family then bad news broke. Cowboys had come and war broke. Me and my family had to go on a journey to go and hunt buffalo for food. We stayed 4 nights and 3 days then we hunted fish. We got lots of buffalo and fish to take back to our camp and everybody was happy. The chief called us back to our Indian camp and it was so peaceful because the cowboys had gone and there was no more fighting and killing, we all were so happy. The chief said my family had to be crowned with head dresses and everybody was happy to have their peaceful life back.
