Christmas Party Fun Stay and Play

We had a fabulous Christmas Party on Wednesday shared with parents.  It was a magical morning spent with Santa who arrived in a Fire Engine because there was nowhere to land his sleigh!

Big thanks to the Sumburgh Local Authority Fire Brigade for rescuing Santa from a field and bring him to our party and big thanks to Santa for travelling so far to come and visit us.  The bairns thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Santa and finding out all about his reindeers and elves.

We loved playing all the party games……

….but the highlight was definitely our Gingerbread House building competition!  Great to have so many parents and family involved and who better to judge the winner for best Gingerbread House, than SANTA himself!

Just look at the amazing creations that were made by everyone…all the bairns did a fab job and good to see some healthy competitiveness from the parents!

Hoooray to Santa’s winners…Sophie, Bronagh, Isla, Callum and Willum!

Snack time to recharge our energy…

Thank you for coming everyone and making it a special day for all.

More Advent Calendar Fun….

What a wonderful time we have had celebrating the countdown to Christmas with the bairns.  Each child had enjoyed having their own specially tailored activity to share with their friends.

We have continued our fun with…..

Funny faces snack made by Jeanne…

A Christmas present hunt in the forest led by Willum….

Sophie decorated our bikes and scooters to make them all Christmassy….

…and Leva led the Christmas Reindeer race!

Some Christmas playdoh made by Titus….

Christmas Carol Concert

Wir bairns were absolute stars at their Christmas Concert!  What an amazing achievement to stand on stage and perform in front of such a big audience.

The bairns chose their own words to the tune of “Ten Little Elves”, to create their own version of a Christmas song.  They thoroughly enjoyed the process and the confidence gained from having ownership of their own song, was clear to be seen from the amazing participation, singing and happy faces with which they performed ….and of course the fact that they are all still singing it a week later!

We are all so proud of every one of them. Here’s a snap shot of their performances…..

Christmas Advent Calendar

It’s fair to say the Christmas frenzy has hit us!  What an exciting and busy time we’ve had.

For our advent calendar this year, we really wanted to emphasize the value of quality time together, rather than just “things”. So we filled our advent calendar with activity and challenges tailored to each individual bairn’s interests.  Each bairn has a special activity to do and the opportunity to share it with their friends if the wish.  Quality one to one time and time with friends can often be overlooked at such busy times and we’ve all really enjoyed our advent times together so far.

Here’s a sneaky peek at what they’ve been up to…….

Christmassy Water play!

Digging for Christmas treasure!

Build a snowman………

….and knock it over!

Making hot chocolate…

Create a unicorn making craft station!

Frozen dance off and musical statues….

Make your own christmas sand tray…..

Make a Christmas snack…

Make a John Deer Tractor…..

Farewell Mrs Sunshine

We had to say farewell to Mrs Sutherland this week.  Mrs Sutherland had been covering the vacant post which Mrs Dutch has now filled.

The bairns nick-named Mrs Sutherland “Mrs Sunshine” which seemed to stick with her throughout her time with us.  We had a lovely send off for her with sunshine stickers, songs and dance.

We will really miss Mrs Sutherland and really appreciate all her support, but we will look forward to seeing her in Nursery again anytime to cover holidays and such like.

I’ll huff and I’ll puff…….

The bairns have been really interested in building this term.  This week we read the story of The Three Little Pigs and experimented with building houses for each pig out of straw, sticks and bricks…..

It was really hard to build a house from the straw.  “It didn’t stay up.” (Elsie)

“I huffed and I puffed and I could knock da sticks down.” (Honor)

“The best one was when we used all the stuff to build da house.  It was da biggest and da strongest.”

We had lots of fun exploring the story with roleplay and exploring, strength, materials, size, weight, position, forces, problem solving to decide on the best material and how to test them.

The bairns decided the bricks were easier to build with because they could stack but they still fell over, so we explored different types of brick….foam….wood….stone….and built a wall.

Busy bees….

It’s great to be busy, work together, problem solve and let friendships develop, all at play.

we have enjoyed making pizza for snack, lots of building and measuring and being creative.  The bairns really enjoyed themselves and transferred they play outside, using larger loose parts to build than the marble run and making pizza and soup in the mud kitchen.

Mrs Colvin “Oooh this tastes like delicious chicken soup.”  “No Mrs Colvin, it’s MUD soup!” 😂

The bairns made a games hiding balls in pipes and wondered how to get them out, how many would come out, which end would they come out and so on.  Lots of great counting, estimating and problem solving as well as great co-operation working together.

There’s a bit of a Frozen frenzy happening in Nursery too with the upcoming new Frozen 2!  Our bairns are turning their den into a Frozen palace, enjoying the princess dresses and songs.

our creative area has been popular making Frozen props and decorations with a focus on using squares as our shape of the week.
