Celebrating Our Achievements

Today we held a coffee morning to celebrate our achievements over the year! We have achieved our level 2 Rights Respecting School award as well as our 3rd eco flag! We are very proud of these achievements as well as all the others displayed on our achievement wall for you all to see! We would like to thank the community for coming along and joining us to help celebrate, there was a great turn out and it was great to see everyone.

Killer Whales spotted in Cullivoe

Today just after break we got a surprise phone call to tell us there was killer whales at the Cullivoe pier so we got a bus to take us to where we could see them. They were on the move so we went to Kellister where we got lots of pictures and videos of them. For most of us this was the first time we have seen killer whales and it was very exciting!! There were some females, a bull and baby whales.  There were circling the rocks trying to get seals that were around there. We think they got ones.

Here is a video that Ben took of the Killer Whales today. See if you can count them all. We counted 9 but there were apparently 14 altogether.

Amy and Emalee come to visit

As we have been learning about living and growing in topic this term, Amy Witt came into school with her baby Emalee today to tell us what it is like to care for a baby. She showed us how to brush her teeth (all 2 of them), change her clothes and change her nappy. It was very interesting learning about everything you need to do and think about when you have a baby. Emalee was really good and a delight to have in school, she liked when Ollie played peek a boo with her. We all got a cuddle at then end too.

Thank you very much for coming in Amy and Emalee!

Cullivoe School Coffee Morning

This morning we held a coffee morning raising money for Red Nose Day and school funds. We made bacon rolls and fruit kebabs to give to people and sold red noses, lots of people came to support our coffee morning and we had a few take outs too. 🙂

Dylan and Ben counted up our total: the coffee morning raised  £195.35 and selling the red noses raised £44 so we raised £239.39 in one morning!

A huge thank you to everyone that came and supported us or got a take out. We really appreciate your support.

Red Nose Day

We have all got our red noses on for Red Nose Day! We also decided to dress in red which was easy for us as our school uniform is red! We are busy getting ready for our coffee morning just now.

James has set us a challenge of keeping on our noses all day without taking them off. We agreed that you could take them off when eating or drinking but he thinks he will manage to keep his on during snack and lunch. Wish us luck!

Cullivoe Up Helly Aa

On Friday 24th February we met at the school at nine and got our shields so we were ready to meet the Jarl squad. Then we got the bus up to the hall and met up with the Jarl squad and got to see the galley, we got our photo taken with the galley.

After a while we got in the galley and went down the hill to the Jamison’s garage.

This is when some of us had to come off because there were other children there wanting a turn in the galley, from there we went to the school.

There were lots of photos taken here with the Jarl Squad. The community came in for a cup of tea, coffee or juice and a biscuit.

After that we got to hold/put on the jarl squad things like helmets, shields and axes.

The jarl squad very kindly handed around creme eggs to all the children and some adults if they were lucky. The Jarl squad sang their songs and danced a little which was good before they went visiting.

When they left the school, we practised our squad to make sure everything went smoothly for the performance at night. We also played Chinese ladders which is when you get a partner and sit foot to foot all in a line with spaces between each pair (it looks like a ladder) you all get numbered then you have to run up the ladder from your space, round the back and end up back in your space. The Jarl squad came back and we got a photo outside with the jarl squad.

Then we had dinner with the Jarl squad, it was delicious!! When we were waiting for our pudding the Jarl squad started singing and had us join in so we all sang and danced, (we danced on our chairs at one point)

Once we finished our dinner we went home at 2 o’clock for a rest and we came back at 7 o’ clock to get on the bus to go to the procession. We went back to the school to get changed then we preformed our squad at the school. After that we got the bus up to the hall to perform our squad there. When we were finished we got changed into our party clothes and went through to the hall to watch the rest of the squads. We all had a great night!

Bonfire Night

We had our bonfire on the 5th of November which was actually on Bonfire night. We have this up at Mursetter.

We went around Cullivoe on the 22nd of October to collect the wood for the bonfire. We had a full truck of wood and pallets which was great and made this the biggest bonfire we have ever had.  We had a Guy Fawkes to put on top of our bonfire however the secondary pupils make it and they came with it too late so we had to throw it on the side instead. Guy Fawkes was a man who tried to blow up Parliament.

After the bonfire was lit there was a firework display which was great. We loved seeing all the different rockets, some were really loud. We also got sparklers to hold too.

After the bonfire we went to the Cullivoe hall to have a supper. We had hot dogs, burgers, beans and chips. It was delicious!! We had a selection of sauces to go on top. After we had our lovely supper we played games.

Shoebox Appeal

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has helped by donating items for us to fill shoeboxes for the shoebox appeal. We felt as a school we would like to do our bit again this year for the shoe box appeal and help those less fortunate this Christmas by giving them a gift. We have been extremely busy wrapping the boxes and then filling them, making sure we had the correct items for the different people. We would like to thank Winnie from the women’s guild who came to help us which was great. We have managed to fill an amazing 34 shoe boxes! They have now been sent to Blythswood Care to be distributed. Again thank you very much!

Happy Halloween

On Friday night we went guizing. There was about 41 children that went guizing. We started altogether and visited the houses around the school before splitting into two groups and going North/South. There were lots of brilliant costumes and we had lots of fun. The older secondary pupils went guizing too. They scared one lot of children by hiding in the bus when they were in one of the houses, when we came out and opened the bus door then they jumped out and shouted which gave poor Jessica a terrible gluff! We had lots of fun and got lots of sweeties from the kind people in Cullivoe. They were also kind enough to give us money to help buy fireworks for next weekend. Mrs Lawson thinks we raised about £500 so THANK YOU very much for your generosity!

On Sunday we had our Halloween party at the school. Most of us attended and all dressed up. We all took in pumpkins that we had carved. There were lots of really good ones!

We had a parade to show off our costumes then played the corner game.

Then we split into two groups so we could start with a different game. The older ones went through to the classroom first and the younger ones stayed in the canteen then they swapped over after a while. In the canteen we could colour Halloween pictures or make little ghosts out of tissues. In the classroom you had to try and eat a pancake or a party ring that was tied onto a bit of string and covered in syrup or chocolate sauce. It was extremely messy but great fun!

After this we all came through to the classroom to play a different game. We had to get into 4 different groups, one at a time we had to run up to the table put our heads into a bowl of oatmeal and try to get as much witches fingers and cats poop into our mouths as we could and carry it over to our bowl on our chair before the next person could go. (It wasn’t really witches fingers or cat poop, just chocolate fingers and malteasers.) The team with the most in their bowl at the end won. After this game we played another one called mice pirls (again it wasn’t really mice pirls but raisins.) We had to use our mouths to carry one raisin at a time from the bowl on our chair to the bowl on the table at the other side. The team that got all their raisins in their bowl on the table won.

Once we finished these games we ducked for apples. We went against each other. This was the last game to play.

We had sooooo much fun at the party! Thank you to all that came and took part in the games!
