Gordon McCracken Visit!

Today we had Gordon McCracken along to visit with a few of his friends!

He did an assembly with us and taught us lots of interesting facts about Bumblebee’s (and made 2 bee’s out of balloons!) and also told the story of the blind man who Jesus helped to see.

After this, Gordon did a workshop with P6 & 7. They learned lots about ventriloquism and skills which make a good puppeteer!

Can you say the letters b, f, m, p, v or w without using your lips?

We’ve had a wonderful afternoon!

Visit to the New Hostel!

After performing in the 2018 Shetland School’s Music Festival, we went to visit the New Halls of Residence – aka. The Hostel.

First we had our lunch, and then Nick – the manager of the Hostel – took us for a tour! We saw the rec rooms (where the residents chill out), study (where they do any homework), music rooms (which have soundproof walls) and we even got a sneak peek in the bedrooms!

“I was SO happy that there’s double rooms so I can share with Abbie when I go to the hostel!” – Ruby

“My favourite part of the hostel was the gym!” – Evie

“I liked the gym and loved the games room!” – Hunter

“I liked that the rooms all had en-suites!” – Amanda

“Going to the hostel was really fun!” – Heidi

Arches Challenge!

On Monday 12th February, we were set a challenge!

We began by discussing arches; how they are built and how they stand up. We looked at bridges which are created using an arched shape and where the pressure points are on these.

Then Mrs Kavagnah & Miss Jamieson armed us with a packet of crackers and a jar of peanut butter… and using these, we had to create an arched bridge!

Some groups had more success than others…

Music Festival 2018

Today Cullivoe Primary school took part in the Shetland Music Festival. The bairns performed in various categories and all did a fantastic job! I hope they are all feeling very proud of themselves!

P1-7 received a gold award for their performance of Leonard Cohan’s ‘Hallelujah’!

P5-7’s Fiddlers also performed as part of an orchestra, along with pupils from Mid Yell and Baltasound. Unfortunately the video is too big to upload but I will continue to try!!

Bridge Challenge!

We’ve been working hard in our House Teams (co-operative learning groups) this afternoon designing a new bride for the 3 Billy Goats after theirs was destroyed in a storm!

We’ve worked together to look at different styles of bridges, design our own, consider our materials and discuss strengthening our original ideas. As well as being a valuable team member, we each have a role within the group. These are:
– Project Manager
– Resource Manager
– Peace Keeper
– Time Keeper
– Eco-Warrior
– Collection Officer

We’ve all started creating our bridges and can’t wait to finish them tomorrow afternoon! We will be testing them to see if they will withstand the 3 Billy Goats crossing them (how much weight they can hold!).

Yell Show Cake Making

For the Yell show we are entering a novelty cake.  On Friday we baked sponge and put it in the freezer until we need it. Today we finished designing our cake and we have already made the cake bases, animals, marshmallow krispies, a bouncy castle and bunting.  We got fondant and have been moulding animals. We made cows, horses and dogs. To make the marshmallow krispies we got butter, marshmallows and rice krispies. We melted the butter and marshmallows together and then added the rice krispies in. We will mould them into cars. To make the bouncy castle we used flumps and cocktail sticks to put them together.

P4-6 Artwork

In art P4-6 have  been doing a mini topic and have learnt more about two artists: Picasso and Steven Brown.

They were learning about Picasso, in particular his artwork involving Cubism and although some of us were a little bit apprehensive about how crazy his artwork was, we really enjoyed creating our own! Then we learnt more about Steven Brown, his life, and his McCoo Family.

We used a mixture of sharpies, pastels and paint to create our artwork. Here are some pictures of our inspired works!
