Picasso’s Blue Period

Primary 1-3 have been learning about Picasso in art this term.

Picasso was a Spanish artist and is one of the most famous artists in the world. He had a phase in his painting where he made lots of blue paintings. This was called his Blue Period.

We looked at some of his paintings and thought about the colours he used, how they made us feel and how the people in the paintings felt.

We then looked at some of his other paintings out with his blue period and thought how the bright colours made us feel. We compared two of the paintings and discussed colours that we could use to make a happy portrait and what colours we could use to make a sad prtrait.

Half of the class wanted to draw a happy portrait of themselves and the other half wanted to paint a sad portrait of themselves taking inspiration from Picasso’s Blue Period.

Letter from Tavish Scott

Today we received a letter from Tavish Scott our local MSP which informed us that he has lodged a motion in Parliament in recognition of our recent award from UNICEF UK. He congratulates us on all our work in respecting the rights of everyone in the school and indeed, in the wider community. In return we would like to thank him for lodging this motion and taking the time to send us a letter to inform us. You can see the letter and read the motion below.

Celebrating Our Achievements

Today we held a coffee morning to celebrate our achievements over the year! We have achieved our level 2 Rights Respecting School award as well as our 3rd eco flag! We are very proud of these achievements as well as all the others displayed on our achievement wall for you all to see! We would like to thank the community for coming along and joining us to help celebrate, there was a great turn out and it was great to see everyone.

Killer Whales spotted in Cullivoe

Today just after break we got a surprise phone call to tell us there was killer whales at the Cullivoe pier so we got a bus to take us to where we could see them. They were on the move so we went to Kellister where we got lots of pictures and videos of them. For most of us this was the first time we have seen killer whales and it was very exciting!! There were some females, a bull and baby whales.  There were circling the rocks trying to get seals that were around there. We think they got ones.

Here is a video that Ben took of the Killer Whales today. See if you can count them all. We counted 9 but there were apparently 14 altogether.

 

 

School, Transition

P7 Transition

Today the primary 7s from Burravoe and Mid Yell came up to Cullivoe for our first transition day. First we got put into groups and we had the chance to get to know each other. We had to think of a group name and a chant. After break we had to complete a ‘who’s who’ activity and match up pictures of all the Mid Yell staff with their name and job title. We then learned more about Yammer and how we can use this to communicae throughout this project. The main reason for today was to start off our project which is organising a trip for our class. In our groups we have to work out where we want to go, how much it will cost, what we are doing, where we will stay, food and how we will get there. We have all come up with a rough idea and are really excited to discuss this more and plan it. We all had a fantastic day and worked really well together. We are looking forward to our next transition day in Mid Yell in the few weeks.

Virtual Walk

This term we have started the daily mile again. Primary 1-3 complete half a mile and primary 4-7 complete a full mile. We can walk, run, cycle, skooter or roller blade. We have signed up to an online virtual walk on a website called World Walking, this is where you add in the number of miles you all complete and virtually walk around various parts of the world. We have chosen to walk the length of Canada. You can see our progress through the link below.

Welcome back everyone! We are looking forward to a busy term! We are going to be writing stories in literacy, learning about  measurement and fractions in numeracy and our topic this term is religion so we will be looking at Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Ying will also be back to teach us more Mandarin. We have also started our daily mile again this term.

P4-7 art

 Primary 4-7 have been learning about Vincent Van Gough and impressionism in Art.

Van Gough was born in the Netherlands in 1853 but sadly died at the age of 37 in 1890. He is what we call a Post-Impressionist painter.

Impressionism is a French movement, developed from an association at the end of the 19th century. The paintings made by the impressionists are generally small, with visible paintbrush strokes.

We had a go at an impressionist painting in the manner of Vincent Van Gough. We took two of his paintings as inspiration: Starry Night and Sunflowers.
