Term 4 Week 10

Here is a look at what has been happening in P5/6/7 this week.

World Cup Maths. The class have been taking part in different ‘World Cup’ themed maths challenges over the week. They had to sort the 48 qualifying countries by continent and double check using Google Maps. Then they had to use their data to create a bar chart. To quote Paige, “This is the best morning ever as we get to do geography and maths!” We’ve also looked at angles and football shots too.

Big Question – The World Cup. As part of our world cup mini topic, we have been looking at Football Stadiums. We watched a video of the different stadiums that are being used in the world cup, and then the class set to work building their own. They all created very unique designs with clear features of a stadium present in every one. We then went on a stadium tour around the room to see the different creations.

Baking fun. On Tuesday, the class made their own ‘quick’ empire biscuits with Miss Farmer.  Lots of colourful designs which were very much enjoyed by everyone.

Sustainable Squad. We finished off our work on the Sustainable Development Goals with a challenge. In groups or individually, the class had to link and share information about two or more goals. They were encouraged to think creatively about what to link and how to present their learning. We had models, presentations, sporting challenges, fact books, puppet shows, posters, board games, and even a song! P5/6/7 never fail to impress with their creativity and imaginative ideas.

World Cup Murder Mystery. One thing the class asked to do before the end of term was another murder mystery game. So linking with our world cup mini topic, we took part in ‘The Clutch Calamity’. The kids all had lots of fun but on this occasion no one managed to guess that Paige had stolen the World Cup Trophy.

P5/6 Trip to Burra. We had a fantastic day out to Burra this week and were really blessed with gorgeously hot and sunny weather. The class enjoyed climbing up and over rocks, skimming stones, walking to the Hamnavoe Lighthouse, looking for crabs, toasting marshmallows, and wave watching. We then all enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Toogs playpark.

Term 4 Week 9

Hello from Frankies. This week’s blog is being written by Esther, Emma-Lee, Ava and Cheryl as we patiently wait for our delicious food to arrive.

Donald Duck Day. For our writing this week, we created fact files about Donald Duck as it was his 92nd birthday. We enjoyed watching an old cartoon from 1948 and also his version of ‘Let it go’ before creating fact files or presentations all about his life.

French zoos. We worked in groups to create 4 part dioramas with different zoo animals in each sections. We had to draw and label the animals and some groups even added entrances and gift shops to their zoos.

Big Question  with Mrs. Mainland. This week, P5/6 have been learning about what to do in an emergency. They discussed the different emergency services, what to do if there is an emergency and created their own first aid kits. They looked at the history of lifeboats and the RNLI campaign ‘Float to Live’. Inspired by this, Mrs. Mainland and the class created lovely pieces of artwork.

P5/6 Museum Trip. On Friday morning, P5/6 headed to the museum for a very fun workshop. Megan said, “It was lots of fun and we all really enjoyed it. We got to make our own clay boats.”

P7 trip to UNST! Amazing! Fun! Sleepless! We’ve had an excellent few days away in Unst. Some highlights include Glansin Glass, laser tag, Muness Castle, quiz night, as Smithy and I (Cheryl) won, face masks, making a band, swimming pool, pasta, chicken nuggets, 5 slices of toast for breakfast, Skaw beach and the Unst charity shop. It was the best trip ever!!

Thanks for reading our class blog 🌞

Term 4 Week 8

Hello! It’s Smithy and Cheryl here who have the POWER of the Amazing, Wonderful, Epic Blog!

Shetland Sangwriting Workshop. Claire came in for the morning and we got to hear her play the fiddle and learn we learned about Betty Mouat. We got to dance a Boston Two Step and also wrote our own poems or songs and performed them. There was lots of creativity and original ideas shared.

Brilliant Beetles. For writing this week we focused on Beetles. We found out that there are 400,000 species of beetles world wide and each created a fact file about a different beetle. Have a look at the epic posters below.

World of Work 1. Andrew, Esther and Rebekah’s dad, came in to speak to us on Wednesday. We learned all about different types of engineers and the skills and qualities they need. We also had a lot of fun designing bridges out of one sheet of paper. Nobody thought the hammock bridge would work but it actually did.

Sustainable Squad. We all had a lot of fun making bird feeders out of different junk modeling resources. We’re hopeful that the birds enjoy our new bird feeders.

World of Work 2. On Friday, John and Reece came in to speak to us about their work. We got to solve different problems and all got quite competitive. We even got a chance to use some of the specialist equipment that they brought in to measure the height difference in the playground.

A big thank you to Claire, Andrew and John for coming in to visit us this week.

Thanks for reading our awesome blog!

Term 4 Week 7

Hi, this is Freya, Campbell and Rebekah writing. I hope you enjoy reading this blog on what we’ve been doing this week!

World of Work 1. Jennifer Briggs came in to talk about her job and what she does. It was really fun and we learned lots of interesting and gross facts about the human body. We loved it! We all really enjoyed getting to use some of the equipment from her doctor’s bag too.

World of Work 2. Liam Adamson came in and spoke about what he did when he was younger. He explained that after finishing at SJHS, he moved from S4 to S5 at Anderson High School. However, shortly after starting there, an apprenticeship job opportunity came up that he decided to apply for. He only spent around five weeks at Anderson before leaving to begin an apprenticeship. The job involved working on ferries that travelled between the islands in Shetland.

Thanks to Jennifer and Liam for coming in to visit us.

Sustainable Squad. This week for Sustainable Squad we were learning all about Marine animals and their adaptations.  We all created posters about the animals and how they have adapted based on the environment or based on their physical features. Campbell and I used what we learned to make bookmarks for everyone in the class. Here are some of the facts we included.

Bottlenose Dolphin. Fun fact: Their nostrils migrated to the top of their heads to form a blowhole, allowing them to breathe at the surface.

Seals. Fun Fact: To endure deep-sea diving, seals evolved a high tolerance for lactic acid and can store large amounts of oxygen in their tissue and blood.

We hope you have enjoyed reading our blog.

From Freya, Campbell and Rebekah😊😎😁

Term 4 Week 6

Homework Projects – A Time in History. On Monday, everyone presented their personal projects about a chosen time in history. We learned about such a wide range of topics and events and I am so impressed with how confidently everyone presented their work. We were even treated to sweeties and jelly during some of the presentations. It was absolutely to see how prepared and organised people were in sharing their work. Great effort!

Maths. For maths, we have been starting each day with our ‘5-minute flash’ task. We have different topics and 5 minutes to complete 30 questions. We are racing against ourselves to get quicker times and it allows us to practice different skills from addition and subtractions to fractions to time. We’ve also been learning about area, perimeter, co-ordinates, weight and volume. We’ve done different practical tasks as well as having a competition to design a zoo, whilst focusing on the area and perimeter of the animal enclosures.

This or That – Habitat Heroes. This week we’ve been learning about ‘The Wetlands’. We got to choose if we wanted to work together or individually to create a poster or presentation about ‘The Wetlands’ making sure to include information about the climate, key features, animals and plants. The results were fantastic and everyone worked hard to ensure their work met all the criteria and was thematic. Well done P5/6/7!

Big Question – Unique Powers – Real-world Impact! This week we have been learning about the different skills and qualities people can have and how they link to different jobs and careers. We created our own superhero posters highlighting our own skills and qualities and linked them to our dream job.

Term 4 Week 1

Hello and welcome back to term 4. It’s me, Riley, who is helping Mrs A to write the blog this week.

Morning Movement – Every morning we either do Daily Mile or Just Dance but this week Mrs A found a new challenge to do. We had to do different actions in time with the screen such as jump, duck, smash, dodge and run. I was ready to go back to bed after all the movement! It was tiring but lots of fun!

Speedy Skills – To practice our new speedy skills in maths we played a game of ‘Quick draw’ . Mrs A would say ‘Draw an acute angle’ or ‘Write a number that is prime’ and then we would draw or write our answers within 5 seconds. If we were wrong or didn’t have an answer, we would be out. But if you were the last person standing, you won a prize. Rebekah and Glyn won the prizes today.

Reading – For reading this term we are working on reading stamina. We all choose somewhere that we want to read, get comfy and then have an extended time of reading.

Writing – The Mini World. Our new targets in writing are focused on using a range of descriptive vocabulary and engaging openers. This week we wrote stories about a ‘Mini World’ and had to try and include lots of types of words / phrases (similes, metaphors, alliteration) as well as different openers. Here are a selection of some of the stories written this week.

Big Question – Plants. We have been learning about what makes a plant a plant and it needs uses its leaves to make its own food. Mrs A did some free drawing art with us where we could chose a flower to draw and we got to choose what materials to use as well. Everyone really enjoyed this and the results are brilliant. We then worked in groups to create posters about different types of plants. I worked with Joe and we researched ‘Trees’ and we found out about highly toxic and venomous trees.

This or That. There were lots of people keen to share their independent learning this week so on Friday before lunch some groups presented their research on Rainforests or on Victorian working conditions. It was fantastic to see such a range of things produced by the class.

Thanks for reading our blog this week 😊

Term 3 PE

We had a busy term in PE taking part in Dance, Handball and Badminton.  Throughout the blocks we covered a lot of our benchmarks, but focused on Motivation, Decision Making and Balance and Control.

Here we are in Handball and Badminton.

Term 3 Week 12

What a super busy and fun term we’ve had in P5/6/7. Here is a look at what the class have being doing over the final week of the term.

Wellbeing, connection and support. On Monday, Jennifer from Active Schools came in to talk to us about the benefits of physical activity. We started off by playing some games and having fun in the fresh air. Then we discussed the importance of getting 60 minutes of physical activity each day, whether this was in smaller blocks or 1 big block, all of it counts. We also looked at the benefits to our bodies and minds. It was a super way to finish off our unit on ‘Wellbeing, connection and support.

A morning with Mrs Teale. The kids all enjoyed a morning with Mrs Teale while we were away at Euroquiz. They worked in groups to create ‘something’ to share with each of the other classes about their ‘Wellness, connection and support’ work. They had to ensure that it was suited to the ‘class’ and would be fun for the kids.

Eilidh S, Emma-Lee and Magnus created lots of fun things for the nursery to do.

Ava T and Cheryl wrote and performed a song, with actions, for the P1/2 class.

Eilidh R, Anthea and Alagna put together a fun filled session for P3/4.

Joe, Paige and Esther put together a session for the P4/5 class and have a few bits to finish before sharing with the class.

Euroquiz. On Tuesday, two teams travelled up to Lerwick to take part in the Shetland heats of the Euroquiz. Both teams did amazingly well and finished 5th and 6th overall. Well done to all of the kids involved and a massive thank you to everyone who took time to practice with them at home.

Big Question – The drive to float.  This week, our big question was focused on buoyancy. We also look at why things float or sink. We tested an orange and a grapefruit which both floated with their skin on but sunk when their ‘lifejacket’ was removed. We then did an experiment to see if we could make clay float by turning lumps of it into boats. There were some very successful attempts and some more creative ones. But lots of fun was had by all.

Having an ‘ice’ time. On Thursday afternoon, we had an end of term treat of ‘cups of ice’. This was something the kids all loved at the music festival gala performance and I thought it would be a different kind of end of term fun! I think it is safe to say that it was enjoyed by all.  (We were too busy enjoying our ice and Easter treats that I forgot to take photos.)

Have a lovely Easter break 🐥🐰
