Climate Smarter – Batteries

Recently, we built our own batteries using coins, zinc and cardboard soaked in a solution of vinegar and water.  We are learning how to use the multi-meters from our Climate Smarter kit.  We measured the electricity generated from our battery cells.

Music Technology – Incredibox

We have been exploring different kinds of music technology recently and this week we have been using a piece of software called Incredibox. The online software enabled us to create our own music with a crew of beatboxers. We could choose from four different styles and had the chance to lay down, record and share our mixes.

We had criteria to follow when creating our mixes. Our compositions had to:

  • be at least 26 seconds long
  • have a loop change
  • showcase a muted/solo beatboxer

Here are links to some of our compositions:

Climate Smarter

As part of our Climate Smarter STEM topic, the children are learning about renewable energy and climate change.  They have been working together, participating in experiments.  Recently, they had fun with solar energy and made floating wind turbines.  There’s more to come!

Term 3 PE

We started the term focusing on fitness through Shetland Dance.  We discussed what components of fitness we needed in dance and were surprised that stamina and muscular endurance are both needed.  The dances we learnt were a Dashing White Sergeant, Orcadian Strip the Willow, a Gay Gordons, an Eva Three step and a Circassian circle.  The class particularly liked the Orcadian Strip the Willow.   In the Teacher led PE session the class have also done a Boston Two Step, St. Bernard’s Waltz and a Canadian Barn dance.

Our next block of work is Handball, which is a change to the term plan.  Handball was due in Term 4, but has been swapped with football so that we can hopefully get outside for the football block.

UHA 2024

Tuesday 30th January 2024 was a special day at Sound Primary School as we were visited by both the Junior and Senior Jarl Squads of 2024.

The Junior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl Skeppare Nokkvesson (aka Oran McCulloch), were in fine voice during their time with us, supported by a group of young local musicians who did a brilliant job. ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’ was definitely a highlight! The clip below shows all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song.

The Senior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl King Harald Olafsson (aka Richard Moar) were also pretty spectacular both in sight and sound. A fantastic line up of local musicians provided the music for the Up Helly Aa song and also their squad song which made us all want to get up and dance! Here is a clip of all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song. The Jarl commented how loud and enthusiastic our singing was. High praise indeed from a ‘King’!

P7 Hop Afternoon

Primary 7 pupils and staff from Bells Brae school joined our Primary 7 classes for our hop this afternoon.  Both the senior and junior jarl squads visited as well as members of the UHA committee.  Thank you to Miss Stewart and her band ‘Leeshin At’ for the live music.   Great tunes!  Thank you to all involved.  What a great afternoon of dancing and fun!

Up Helly Aa

We had lots of fun walking to see the junior galley at Clickimin.  We were lucky to have both the junior and the senior jarl squads visit our school and we got a chance to meet some of them and look closely at their suits and have a chat.  At the end of the day, we danced with our buddies in primary 1.  We’re learning some of the traditional dances including Strip the Willow and the Dashing White Sergeant.
