Hockey

P7 have been doing hockey in PE.  The activities have focused on how to use and turn the stick so that the ball only touches the flat side, ball control and sending and receiving the ball.  P7’s were able to transfer their knowledge from other games when playing in 3v3 matches.

Climate Smarter – Calculating Tree Age

As part of our inter-disciplinary learning, we went outdoors into the Wildlife Area to measure trees and estimate their age.  We worked in pairs, using our critical thinking,, communicating, focus and curiosity meta skills.  We used the formula –

circumference divided by pi = diameter

Then, we took the diameter and multiplied that by the growth factor to come up with an estimate for tree age.  We couldn’t be sure what the growth factor was for each tree, so we used 1.5 or 2 or 2.5 to estimate the tree age.  It was fun!

Visit to Taing House – Sunflower Seed Planting

Our class visited Taing House last week to plant sunflower seeds and draw sunflowers with the service users.  It was a lot of fun and we used our creative meta skills as well as our communication skills.  We’ve been invited back!

Handball

P7 have been doing handball in PE.  This is a new game to us, but we have used a lot of previous learnt skills and understandings to play in these games.  Some of the differences have been the size of the ball, using a one handed pass and the rule around movement and dribbling means the game is fast paced.

Reading Week – Door Display

As part of reading week, the class decided to decorate the class door with Mr Men and Little Miss characters.  We are writing books in the style of Roger Hargreaves to read to our buddies in Primary 1.  The door is really bright and colourful!  Well done everyone!

Climate Smarter – Batteries

Recently, we built our own batteries using coins, zinc and cardboard soaked in a solution of vinegar and water.  We are learning how to use the multi-meters from our Climate Smarter kit.  We measured the electricity generated from our battery cells.

Music Technology – Incredibox

We have been exploring different kinds of music technology recently and this week we have been using a piece of software called Incredibox. The online software enabled us to create our own music with a crew of beatboxers. We could choose from four different styles and had the chance to lay down, record and share our mixes.

We had criteria to follow when creating our mixes. Our compositions had to:

  • be at least 26 seconds long
  • have a loop change
  • showcase a muted/solo beatboxer

Here are links to some of our compositions:
