STEM Event – NAFC

Some of the Primary 7 pupils chose to attend the STEM event (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at Scalloway this week.  They had a very busy day participating in various workshops including engineering, drones, app design and circuits.

Art lesson

In Art p7 have been learning about Andy Warhol and popular culture.

Having been inspired by his portraits, we drew a cartoon version of ourselves then transferred it on to a polystyrene block.

We had to cut up the block into 5 parts so we could print each bit a different colour.  Using the printing inks we printed each of the 5 pieces to create these colourful portraits.  Most of the class managed to to print 2, trying out different colour combinations.

Great work from p7 as this project was technical and quite tricky!

Music Festival Performances

Several pupils have participated in the music festival lately.  They treated us to performances in the Senior Wing.  We’ve heard Fiddlesticks and also the guitar students playing their pieces.  We hope that you can enjoy the videos below of the guitarists.  We’re looking forward to the saxophonists playing soon.

Peat Bog Restoration

As part of our Climate Smarter topic, Primary 7 went on a hike up Sound Brae and along Cunningham Way, behind the Sandy Loch, to meet Sue White, the Peat Restoration officer here in Shetland.  Sue talked to us about the importance of spagnum moss and how it’s used to replenish the peat bogs, to help to reduce the CO2 emissions from peat.  The bairns got on gloves and picked moss then planted it into the peat bogs.  Hands were a little cold, but the bairns persevered with the task.  Well done everyone!  We also measured the depth of the peat and estimated that where we stood, the peat was over 2,000 years old!  We used our collaborative, communicative and critical thinking meta skills.

Outdoor Education

Primary 7 have been fortunate to go to Kergord Woods recently with Pete and Grant, the Outdoor Education officers.  We used a host of meta skills as we navigated through the woods, including collaboration, focus and communication.  We jumped over the burn, found our way through the trees, climbed up and through the burn, built dens, played hide and seek, climbed trees and enjoyed nature all around us.  We had fun on our adventures!

Hockey

P7 have been doing hockey in PE.  The activities have focused on how to use and turn the stick so that the ball only touches the flat side, ball control and sending and receiving the ball.  P7’s were able to transfer their knowledge from other games when playing in 3v3 matches.

Climate Smarter – Calculating Tree Age

As part of our inter-disciplinary learning, we went outdoors into the Wildlife Area to measure trees and estimate their age.  We worked in pairs, using our critical thinking,, communicating, focus and curiosity meta skills.  We used the formula –

circumference divided by pi = diameter

Then, we took the diameter and multiplied that by the growth factor to come up with an estimate for tree age.  We couldn’t be sure what the growth factor was for each tree, so we used 1.5 or 2 or 2.5 to estimate the tree age.  It was fun!

Visit to Taing House – Sunflower Seed Planting

Our class visited Taing House last week to plant sunflower seeds and draw sunflowers with the service users.  It was a lot of fun and we used our creative meta skills as well as our communication skills.  We’ve been invited back!
