Aims of the Course
- Develop an understanding of aspects of the music industry, including a basic awareness of implications of intellectual property rights.
- Develop skills in the use of music technology hardware and software to capture and manipulate audio.
- Use music technology creatively in sound production in a range of contexts.
- To critically reflect on their own work and that of others.
- To develop an understanding of 20th and 21st century musical styles and genres.
Description of the Course
Students will work towards a National Qualification at National 5 Music Technology. The course has 3 elements:
- Music Technology Skills: You will learn about and practice music technology skills such as using hardware and software in order to capture and edit sound.
- Music Technology in Context: You will gain experience in using your music technology skills to capture and manipulate audio and sequenced data, and mix down to an audio master in appropriate file format. You will choose two projects from a range of contexts such as studio recording a band/small group, radio broadcast, composing and/or sound design for film, audiobooks and computer gaming.
- Understanding Music: You will develop a knowledge and understanding of musical concepts and a range of musical styles and periods in 20th and 21st century music. You will also gain an understanding of the music industry and learn about Intellectual Property rights.
How is the Course Assessed?
Assignments are externally assessed and are worth 70% of the overall grade. There are two assignments to complete in contrasting contexts.
- Assignment 1 (35%)
- Plan – you will create a very detailed plan of how you will carry out your project.
- Project – You will apply your skills in using hardware and software to record audio and manipulate the sound. Your project will be 1-3 minutes and you will keep a detailed log of your daily progress.
- Evaluation – you will carry out a detailed evaluation of your plan and project.

Understanding Music skills are assessed with a 1 hour written listening exam and is worth 30% of the overall grade.
