Mr Rose and Space

Every Friday Mr Rose comes to our school. He teaches us about space. He knows lots and lots about space. He is really funny. I like working with him doing space. He teaches us lots of stuff about planets. Next week he is showing us about the moon and the different angels of it. Today he showed us about Dawarf planets and where they are in the galxy.  We have done a bit about the moon already and about the first man to go on the moon Neil Armstrong.

Christmas Decorations

On Tuesday we made Christmas decorations. We made big baubles out of old Christmas cards, First we cut out 20 circles of Christmas cards (we used the inside of selotape rolls to draw the circles). Next we cut out a triangle that could fit inside the inside of the circle then we folded the circles around the triangles and stapeled them together into a ball shape; we attached a piece of ribbon with a name tag on it and then we hung them up for Christmas.

We made Christmas baubles with a baloon, string, glue and  sissors. First we inflated our baloons then we cut bits of string and dipped them in pva glue. Then we wraped our bits of string around our baloons and left it to dry. Once the balloons were dry we left the balloon in but if you like you can pop the baloon and then paint the string and then hang it up.

We made an advent calender with little trees which we turn over every day. first we cut out tree stenciles and then we painted the trees green and decorated them with sequins and cut them out. Then we painted numbers on the back of them and stuck them on the wall.

Glow meet with Viewlands Primary School

On Wednesday Burravoe School had a glow meet with Viewlands Primary School. Viewlands Primary 5 had sent question to our teacher and we had to answer them.  There were 42 children in primary 5 but we only saw half of primary 5.  They asked questions about Transport, Shopping, City Life and School Life. We really enjoyed answering questions about Burravoe. We learned a lot  about Perth, Scotland. The Viewlands p5  were very surprised when we said there were 800 people on Yell. We asked questions about energy  and they saved energy just like us. http://www.viewlands.pkc.sch.uk/

Charlotte’s Energy Project

Water Power

We went to Quendale we saw a big wheel that the water pushed around in circles and created energy so the staff could grained the wheat easier. They had a big pond at the top of the hill which when the people open the sluice gate they would get water to push the wheel and grained the wheat. Many mills where built near rivers where they got lots of water.

Before they had water wheels they had to grind with a grinding stone which we had a go and it was really hard work. They are three sorts of water wheels a under shot wheel, a over shot wheel and the middle wheel.

The water wheel is at the side of Quendale mill.

The force of the river pouring through a dam can make lots and lots of clean electricity. Large dams can harm the places where thousands of plants and animals.

Some tidal power stations trap incoming water inside dams. When the tide goes out the water released.

The Isle of Islay is a great place to have a wave machine. The wave machine is a big long snake that is red. It generates 250 KW enough for 500 houses.

The water that is coming from the river and the lakes turn a turbine which makes electricity.

When I made a water wheel, it turn once but I found out that water wheels turn even faster.

Wind Power

Wind is one of the most powerful forms of energy on the Earth. You can find wind power almost every were. The best thing about wind power is that it is free.  Wind Turbines anywhere there is wind.  Turbines are powered by wind power. Turbines can be used the land is unfarmable or they can be put in farm or they can be put into the sea. It is making the world a better place by saving lots of money. In the olden days windmills were used to grind grain, wheat and barley or to pump water for drinking. Now we use them as turbines to generate electricity. Wind turbines can have speeds up to 10 to 90 km/h. The first modern wind turbine was built in Vermont in the early 1940s. Wind Power is renewable energy. The wind turbines are really big.  Wind turbines can be as tall a 20 story flat . It has big giant proprllers that our stuck on an stick. The blades of a wind turbine spin quite fast about  10 to 20 milles an minute. The steel bit of the wind turbine  hold the big 3 blades.  In the wind turbine there is a generator  at the top of wind turbine and then the is a hub. Large wind farms are built offshore.

Inside a turbine

There is

Blades that capture wind,

Rotor hub controls the angle of the blades,

Shaft transfers spinning  energy of the rotor to the generator

Generator uses spinning energy of shaft to generate electricity,

Brake stops the shift if there is an emergency,

Gearbox changes the speed of shaft between rotor hub to generator,

Nacelle is the main body of the turbine,

Tower lifts the blades up into the sky.

We made windmills in technology that turned: Mia’s did.

Solar Power

Solar panels

What do solar panels do?

They heat your water just using the sun.

If you have a caravan and you have a Solar Panel on top it recharges your batteries.

Some people put solar panels in their fields to generate electricity .

Unlike batteries solar power never runs out.

You can find little solar panels on calculators and other thing you might find in your house or your school.

Solar Panel

There are 2 sorts of solar panels; radiation and photovoltaic. Radiation is where there is a pipe with water in that goes from the solar panel to the floor. Photovoltaic is a solar power cell.  Solar power is a kind of energy called renewable.

In Australia and Africa they have 11 hours of sunlight so they have solar panels on top of their house roof  but in Britain and Sweden there 5 hours of sunlight which means  we have less than Australia and Africa.

Non renewable energy sources will run out soon and people are wanting them to buy  solar panels. A plant where electrity is generated it goes to the power staion witch send out electricity to all the houses.

The sun give heat energy equilelvent 90 billon explosions. Solar energy is very good for the world. Solar Panels are not that expensive to buy. Solar power uses light to generate electricity

Fossil fuels

Fossil Fuels are mostly oil, gas and coal which we all use and will soon run out and that why people are wanting you to change and try saving the oil, gas and coal. We need to use renewable energy to save the coal, oil and gas.

Mia’s Energy Topic

Energy

Wind Power

Warm air and cool air mix together and make wind. It moves a wind turbine and it makes electricity. Some people think wind turbines are noisy and scare animals. If they were none of them then we would have no electricity. Lots of wind turbines are put together and then that’s called a wind farm.  Non- polluting can be a predictable force.  One wind turbine can power over 200 homes. That’s why there are not very many about. Some people keep them at their houses like this one in the photo.

Water Power

Water Wheels

Water comes above a big water wheel. It goes around and the water goes in to a stream. Well they are supposed to go around. It has to have water at the top so it work wheels. This water wheel is the Quendale water wheel in Shetland.

Hydro Power

When people burn coal or wood the energy is used up. Other types of energy you can use again and again. Water is one of those energy.  The biggest hydroelectric power stations are The Three Gorges Complex on the Chang-Jing River in China. The energy in water can be converted to electrical energy by forcing the water to flow through a turbine.

Solar Power

You can get solar panels nearly anywhere in the world. It took a long time to invent them. Most of the time they are on top of people’s houses for under floor heating but sometimes they can be used for other things like calculators and some toys.  Storing solar power is really hard. In one hour the sun can make enough energy to power what the world needs for a year!   There are two different kinds of solar panel.

On the Holidays

On the holidays I went to get my ears pierced. I got it done at a taning place at the Toll Clock in Lerwick. It wasn’t that sore. It was realy quick like getting a staple in your ears. It was very hot for a while. I got little studs that are silver. I got it on Thursday in October. After I went to my cousins Josh and Dhilin house. They thought it was really good! 🙂

P.E. In The Hall

On Monday we walked to the Hall to do P.E. which we usually do at school on a Tuesday. Since we walked to the Hall we didn’t have to do a lot of warm ups. Once we had done some warm ups we got into pairs to practise pushing beanbags and bals to eachother then we had to practise throwing and catching. We had to throw and catch our balls but if we droped them then we had to sit down to see who was the last one standing. then we got to throw balls the whole length of the hall we did a cool down and then went to get changed and walked back to school. 🙂 8)
