The Gentle Giant

Yesterday you wouldn’t believe what I saw a REAL TRICERATOPS SKULL! It was huge and guess what it wasn’t fully grown it was a young adult (or a teenager  to you and me.) A fully grown  triceratops  is  10 meters which is all 12 of our pupils holding hands and stretching as far as we can . We made clay models of the triceratops skull we saw. First you had to get some  clay and roll it into a sort of fat sausage and then make the frill(make sure that the frill isn’t too thin),next you can do anything that you haven’t all ready done,I did the mouth but you can do what you want to, ( make sure that you keep easing it of the board ) next I did the horn at the front on his nose and then I did the back horns, then I did the holes in his skull and now your done your clay triceratops skull. We also did a triceratops quiz and then we did a drawing

The triceratops skull is two meters long.  Then we went to the Learning room. We got  the two bits of paper and a clipboard. The first paper was  a triceratops test  is was 10 questions. When you finish the questions on the first paper you go on the next paper. We have to draw the triceratops skull. When we finish the skull we made a triceratops skull out of clay. The Travelling Gallery

On Wednesday we went to the Travelling Gallery it was nice in there. There was some photographs, paintings, a model and a video. The pictures where nice but I liked the video the best because it was about aliens that where trying to climb a mountain. But the aliens where actually just people that where dressed up. After the video we got to have a walk a round in the bus to look at some of the pictures, books, the model and you could write in a comment about what you liked. I put in that I liked the alien video.  Then it was time to get out of the bus so we did but we said bye. Then we split up into two groups. I went with P1 and P2 my group went to the Shetland Gallery. There was lots of art there we got to see one of the artists. Then after we saw all the art work we got some colouring books then we swapped over so we went to Andy’s and we got a go with mini sowing machien .Then we had to go back to school.

Gentle Giants Museum Trip

On Thursday 3rd, we went to the Shetland Museum to see a very very special thing; A TRICERATOP’S SKULL!

It all started when I woke up at 6.50; I found out that there was a power cut, so I got dressed in warm clothes and went to school at 7.40. We don’t usually go to school at  7.40, it’s just that we had to catch the half eight ferry. We picked up our water bottles and sat in the bus. Me, Honor and Bradley grabbed the back seats, we travelled down to the ferry where we meet Melissa, Leah and Neil. Melissa came and sat in the back with us.

We went on the small ferry that took 20 minutes to get to Toft, which is on the mainland. We went upstairs and sat on the chairs. The younger ones went into the play room while the rest sat down. When the boat arrived at the mainland we sat in the bus and travelled for an hour. Until we got to the Shetland Museum. We had a  biscuit and a drink of water. . We went through the rotating doors where we saw the triceratops’s skull and a model of Allosaurus. Me and Mia carried in a box each into the Learning room, where we would be staying for two hours. We dropped our jackets in a box and had a drink of water; next we went to meet Steven our tour guide, who was showing us the triceratops. The triceratops was massive! We looked in a glass case which had all different types of fossils. Next Steven passed round a fossil and asked us what did we think it was? It was …….. dinosaurs poop but it had been fossilized! Then Steven told us to stretch out our arms and join hands to show how long the triceratops was…. it was an extraordinary 10 meters.  Next we got a  sheet with questions about the triceratops; one of the questions was “how long is the triceratops?” How long do you think it is? Afterwards we got to draw the triceratops’s skull, we drew it quite big so we could see it! Next we went back into the Learning Room and saw clay on the table. We got to make clay models of the skull, we got very messy hands! Then that was the end of the fantastic tour.

Our Vist to Pauline’s Workshop

On Wednesday the 18th we went to Pauline Walsh’s who is a felter and she has Workshop which is in Burravoe and saw lot of beautiful felted objects. We found out that most of the things she uses to model most of her object around are from her local beach which is really just a five minute walk from her house which is very lucky for her. Sometimes she uses magnets in her felt balls to make two balls stick together it is very funny when some of the balls didn’t want to stick together. Some of the different felt balls had shells that had little stones in them and they made a noise. For most of Pauline’s felted object she put them in the washing machine. She does most of her work with her felting machine but it looks like a small  sewing machine  but she does some of her felting by hand.
