The Swan 2015

On Wednesday 13th May we went on the Swan. I learned about the reason you turn the coil over after you do it is because its easier to undo it. We had to shout 2,6 PULL 2,6 PULL until we had gotten the sail up and down. The wind was blowing us onto the side slightly so we got splashed by the water a lot. When we were having a go at steering the boat we went by the light house in the distance and we had to make sure we could pretty much see it to make sure we were going straight. We had to tuck the sail under the crease and then tie it up ready for the people. We were looking at the echo sounder and we learned about how it sends a sound under the water and it measures by the echo how deep the water is. It was on a screen and it changed the whole time. We watched it for a while. We saw lots of wildlife like: a gannet,  oyster catcher, bonxies, seagulls and tysties. We went out for 1 hour 45 minutes from 11.15 – 1.00.

Sullom Voe P4-7 Trip 2015

On Monday the 18th of May we went to Sullom Voe with Cullivoe Primary and Mid Yell primary 5, 6 and 7 but Abby tagged along with us.

When we arrived at Sullom Voe we had to go through security and they took anything that had batteries because it could mess with their systems.

When we had passed through security we went and did a safety check. We got split into 3 groups and my group went to the control room.

In the control room we first went to look at everything the lady called Kirsty did. She took us around her desk and showed us the kind of things she had to do. She told us that they have 6 phones and they have 1 emergency phone and to ring that you have to dial 222. They had a board with red lightbulbs on it showing every place there was a fire or smoke alarm.

We then went downstairs and we went to the fire department. We worked with the fire extinguishers. There are 2 types, Water and C02.  The firemen did an experiment with real fire. We then tried on the suits and the gas masks and he but on the air for us sowe were breathing through the mask.

We then went to the ambulance and he showed us all the equipment they had. We went inside the ambulance  and pressed all the buttons inside and we learned that they have a camera inside the back so that the driver can see how the patient is getting on. They have a spare ambulance because of they have so many workers now with one ambulance might not be enough so they are keeping the other one  on supply.

We then had our lunch (Which was AMAZING!) and then went back to the bus and went on a site tour. We saw loads of pipes, the pipes were carrying oil from different parts of Shetland. We saw a huge place that was storing Crude oil.

When we finished our tour we went to the pollution unit and we saw an experiment when he put a chemical into a tank which had water with a layer of Crude oil on the top, when the chemical mixed with the oil it dispersed . They needed to get special permission from the government to use the chemical because it could harm the environment but the pollution team at Sellaness believe it was better to leave the chemical in the long term.

My highlights were putting on the gas mask because it was so cool and weird at the same time when it was on your face, going in the new ambulance because it was so cool inside and you could make the lighting really cool and the dinner!

Next time I would like to learn a bit more about the fire engines and the workers shifts. I liked the idea of driving the ambulance but not being paramedic trained.

I would like to thank all the staff, workers and cooks that gave us such a great experience!

The Swan

We went to the pier and we put on the life jackets and went on the Swan. Rory and Scott helped us to get on the Swan. On the Swan we first went into the cabin Rory told us all about what was happening and what we will we be doing. We went out the cabin and waited soon we went out of the port. When we started to go we pulled up the sail and sailed away. Then we sat down and looked at Emer steering and called out the numbers what was shown on a echo sounder. when it said 00 we were really deep in and when it said 99 we were on top. Then me and Neil noticed a dunter putting his head in and out the water then I showed everyone else and we laughed. Then I looked starboard and we were back at the pier! We went off the Swan took our life jackets off and went back to school. Swan

The Swan Trip

Today we went on a trip on the Swan. First we looked at a chart and we saw Burravoe.

This year Emer,Sofia and Hannah  all steered the Swan and we all saw how deep the sea was by looking at the depth counter and when the number went down the we  said aaawww and when the number went up we cheered. We pulled a rope to pull the sail up it was quite heavy and it was really, really, really fun.

Trip to The Burn of Lunklet

We went to the Burn of Lunklet because we are learning about water and rivers so we went there. First I noticed the fence posts put together under the bridge then Miss Breyley said they were pollution gates they make sure no pollution goes to the sea because some people might throw junk into the water. As we went up closer to the water fall the river got narrower and  narrower as we went up. Then we looked over a bridge at the river. We threw some grass in the river we noticed that the water didn’t just go down it went in circles and then backward and then it changed speed as it went down river. We carried  on doing it, it was fun then went went to the giant water fall it was so cool if you looked carefully then it looked a bit like a jungle in a river its mostly fresh water at the beginning and as it gets near the sea it is salty water. The river is tidal at the river mouth.

Book Reveiw for Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse

This was a very good book.  It was about a girl called Ada who lived in a mansion with ghosts. I felt as if I was in the book as I read it.

In some parts I said to myself OH NO! It was really funny and coinsedental. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes things to do with ghosts, it is not scary at all but ghosts get mentioned a lot.

I Really enjoyed this book!

Old Haa Visit

On Wednesday we went outside for a visit to the Old Haa. We went inside where there were lots of knitting, crochet, embroidery and there was one knitted rug. We sketched all our favourite things. After we went upstairs there were pictures of people who died in Shetland long long ago in wars. Then we went downstairs and ate some cake. It was fun.

What We’ve All Been Working for

Last night was the night, our hearts were pounding, the tension in the air and then it started.

We have been doing the BBC Ten Pieces project with Miss Smith and Mrs Martin. The Ten Pieces project by the BBC is all about ten pieces of classical music and the one we showcased last night was our addition of connect it by Anna Meredith (a living composer). We used body percussion to make music. In P.E. Miss Smith taught us a dance routine and it was really fun. Miss Smith taught us one routine and we got split into three groups. P1-3 got some help from Miss Smith, Abby, Bradley, Honor and I were in another group and P6 and P7 were in the last. We made up are own routines in our groups.

It was now or never, we had been working on this for weeks, this was our chance…………………………………………………

We did the routine Miss Smith taught us then P1-3 did their routine, we did ours then the big ones did theirs and everyone was great. I went better than any of the rehearsals. After we’d finished we went into the little hall so people could play our games. Lily really liked my game she kept coming back and playing it Philip liked my game too. Ann-marie said “it is a game suitable for all age groups”. We made £151 on the raffle.
