Science Ceilidh

We had a day of creativity and science when Louis Hou from Science Ceilidh came to spend time with us to teach us about the brain and to help us be creative about showing what we had learned. We were very pleased that Fair Isle School came to join us for the day and that the weather was so nice we were able to work outside.

Our Victorian Workshop in The Museum and our Walk

On 10/05/18 we drove to Lerwick on the bus. First we went to the museum to do our workshop. When we got there we looked round the museum at the Victorian section. Next we went to the museum’s learning room. They explained to us that this is going to be an Victorian classroom experience! When we went in we got pretend name labels, my pretend name was Ursula Jamieson. When we went inside he called out the register, when he said our pretend name we had to say “present sir”. next we got chalkboards and a piece of charcoal, we had to copy the words on the other chalkboard in the front. When we wrote it was very noisy. Next we got ink pens and ink and we had to write the alphabet on a piece of paper we also got quills. It was easier writing with the ink pen because with the quill there was a risk of blotting the paper. After the workshop we went back upstairs in the museum to have a closer look at the exhibits. Later we went on a walk from the lifeboat building to the Knab in Lerwick, we had to tell which houses were Victorian or older and which were new. I learnt that the lifeboat building was one of the Victorian houses.

Confucius Classroom 2018

This year  the new  Confucius Classroom was in Mid Yell Primary School, it was special because the UK Chinese Ambassador came as well! He was called Ambassador Liu Xiaoming. First Mr Lawson and the Ambassador spoke a long speech, then P1-3 sang Farewell to Yell after there was a couple pieces of music, later we sang the Mandarin Chinese song with the Mid Yell pupils, it was called Da Hai A Gu Xiang, after our song Cullivoe danced to a Mandarin Chinese song (not the same song as we sang). In the end there was a few more speeches it went half an hour over time then we had some Chinese snacks they were very good. We will be able to use the new Confucius Classroom because it is for everyone in Yell.

AfRIS Visit

On 24/4/18 we got a visit from a man called Scott Marley he is an astronomer which means he studies space! AfRIS stands for Astronomy for Remote and Island Schools. He came for the whole day. Astrology and astronomy aren’t the same thing astronomers get annoyed when other people say astrology is the same thing as astronomy because, astrology is star signs and astronomy is the study of space so it the opposite thing. At the end we had some fabric on some poles in a circle and he put a really heavy ball in the middle then he rolled some marbles as planets. it was really fun.

Lambing Shed

This Monday that has been we went to the lambing shed. We saw lots of lambs and there were some sheep that were owes. The owes and the lambs had numbers on them so that John knew lamb belonged to which when they run away and the owes have numbers on them so that John knew which owe which belonged to which lamb when they ran away. The owes would have been very heavy and the lambs would have been a little bit heavy. John talked to us about the lambs and the owes. He talked about how heavy the lambs and the owes were and they were in pens so that they didn’t escape. When the lambs and the owes are stronger and bigger they can all go out and they don’t need to be in the pens anymore. The lambs had protective jackets on them to protect them from the wet weather and to protect them from the cold weather. The owes are very protective and they protect and look after the lambs and when we were at the lambing shed they stamped their feet because they didn’t want us to near and to protect the lambs and the lambs were different colors their different colors were black and grey and the owes were white.

The Scottish Ballet Workshop

P4, P5, P6 and P7 went to Midyell to join their upper primary class for the Scottish Ballet workshop. Once we got there we saw a little bit of the show they were performing, called Highland Fling, by a member of the Scottish Ballet called Kira, and she was dancing the part of a selkie (a creature that can change in to anything it wants). We got warmed up by making a big circle and then one of the members chose one of us to start. The starting person ran to someone and then high-tens them, then that person goes and runs to a different person and, doing the same they swap places and so on. Then when we got it, we add in another person so you have always  have to keep your eyes open and on the look out. After that we added things like jumping, spinning and rolling in the middle, and at the end we did all three. Afterwards we got split into five groups of five and we had to work out three separate shapes that reassembled snow-flakes then show them to the rest of the groups and afterwards we had to make a snow-flake shape using each other’s weight to stay in balance then we had to move from one of our shapes to the next using rolls, leaps, jumps and spins and once we worked it out then we practised because we were going to show it to the other groups again later.

2018 Jarl Balder Presentation

Last Thursday we went to Mid Yell to see 2018s Jarl Balder for our money which was £500 pounds! Mid Yell, Cullivoe and us was all at the presentation to get presented with the money, but the Health- Centre and Care- Centre also got. One person from every school got presented with it and took it back from  the school. I think we might spend the money on for the school bus trips. After the presentation, he said a few words about how he liked coming to visit all the schools seeing us with the Jarl squad and musicians.

Chicken Eggs

In about 2 weeks time our chicken eggs are going to hatch. There due date is the first or second of May. The kind of chicken we got are black rocks. We had chickens the year before but we didn’t have a chicken house for them to live in. This year we do have a chicken house. We put in a bid to Education Scotland’s Food for Thought grant for money so that we could buy the chicken house, food, cart (to put the food in) and two sheds to put in every thing we bought. We are all very excited for the chicks to hatch soon.

The Music Festival 2018

2 weeks ago we went to The Music Festival at Marreel. It was quite enjoyable because it was a different Event that usually happens and only occurs once every two years. We were singing “Birds Of The North” by Barry Gibson, I was playing the drum-box. I liked the song, and I liked it because it had a good tune and it was quite catchy. here is the link for the song we copied.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03g6vsl

After the performance we did we won gold, and the letter we got also said we sang our words very clearly. We had to move around quite a lot because it was getting nearer the to the time of going on stage.
