Welcome to Braehead Primary 4/5
We hope you enjoy exploring our school website page. Our teacher is Ms Slider. Our school assistant is Mrs Lawrie. We have an incredibly busy year ahead of us. Please browse our page to find out the type of activities we do throughout the year.
Literacy
We have introduced “The Write Stuff” as our writing programme for Primaries 4 and 4/5, and the children are learning strategies to develop higher level vocabulary skills. The writing we are producing is amazing and we are enjoying learning these new strategies and skills. In Term 1, we will be looking at writing a persuasive letter and writing an imaginative story. We have spelling and grammar lessons to support our writing skills and have a range of fun spelling activities to help us learn.
We do daily reading in class and take part in the Accelerated Reader and Giglets programmes. These help us to develop higher order thinking and reading comprehension skills.
We also have the opportunity to talk and listen in groups and present information and other ideas to the class.
Numeracy and Maths
We practise mental maths skills every day, and learn new strategies and skills to help us with calculations through our Number Talks. We visit Miss Wilson, who is our Numeracy and Maths co-ordinator, once a week and pupils have opportunities to develop skills through Rapid Maths and the 5 Minute Box. In Term 1, we will be looking at place value, addition and subtraction strategies, estimating and rounding, and Miss Wilson will teach a topic about shape. We will also take part in the weekly “TT Rockstars” school competition.
Health and Wellbeing
We have P.E twice a week and try to do the Daily Mile on the days we do not have P.E. We have daily check ins to see how we are feeling and we have the opportunity to take part in groups to enhance our Health and Wellbeing, such as: Active Schools clubs and Ayr United after-school activities. Our P.E. slots are Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning. In Term 1, we will be learning netball and gymnastic skills. The Primary 5 pupils will also take a 10-week swimming course.
Other interesting information
Our IDL topic in Term 1 will be the Vikings and we will learn about how and why they travelled to Scotland to settle here. In RME, we will be finding out about Christianity and stories from the Bible. We also have timetabled sessions in the garden area for outdoor learning and cooking lessons in the Pantry.
This year, the pupil groups will be up and running again, so some people from the class will be able to be a class rep. We have the Pupil Council, Dyslexia Friendly Schools, Rights Respecting Schools, Digital Leaders and the Eco/Fairtrade Group.
