The benefits of early learning and childcare
How access to early learning and childcare can benefit children and their parents or carers.
The benefits on children’s learning and development by having access to early learning and childcare include:
- learning through play
- improving their communication skills
- building up their confidence
- making friends and having fun.
Increased early learning and childcare hours is ensuring that Renfrewshire children have the best start in life.
The additional hours also benefit parents and carers by reducing the cost of childcare and keeping money in your pocket. It also gives parents and carers more time for work, training, or study.
Children who attend nursery and receive 1140 hours of early learning and childcare will also get a free school meal during lunchtime and a healthy snack.

Early Learning and Childcare – Term Time Placement
Monday – Friday 6 hours per day during term time (38 weeks of the year).
Early Learning and Childcare – All Year Round/Extended Day Placement
- e.g., Morning/afternoon session between the hours of 8am-6pm for up to 48 weeks
- 2.5 days per week between the hours of 8am – 6pm up to 48 weeks per year
- Extended day placement for up to 10 hours a day
Early Learning and Childcare – Blended Model
Please indicate if you wish to use more than one provider (e.g., local authority, funded provider, or childminder) to access your child’s early learning and childcare entitlement.
