Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence has been introduced to raise standards of learning and teaching for all 3 to 18 year olds.  It aims to help prepare children with the knowledge and skills they need in a fast changing world.  A key aim of Curriculum for Excellence is for every child to experience a broad general education from the early years until the end of S3.

Renfrewshire and GIRFEC

Renfrewshire’s GIRFEC policy is intended to ensure that children and their families receive the help they need when they need it.

The GIRFEC approach ensures that when we provide support, it is based on the level of need for each child.

The GIRFEC approach ensures that anyone providing that support puts the child – and their family – at the centre.

GIRFEC is not only important for everyone who works with children – it is also important for many people who work with adults who look after children.

Practitioners need to work together to support families, and where appropriate, take early action at the first signs of any difficulty – rather than only getting involved when a situation has already reached crisis point.  This means working across organisational boundaries; putting children and their families at the heart of decision making and giving all our children the best possible start in life.

Additional Support for Learning

An additional support need is any additional need that a pupil may have, such as:

  • A disability or health issue such as autism, hearing or visual impairment;
  • Family circumstances such as bereavement or homelessness;
  • The learning environment, for example, having English as a second language;
  • Social or emotional issues such as being bullied or being a bully.

Most children with significant additional support needs will be supported through a Pupil Support Plan (PSP). A small number of pupils with very significant additional support needs will have a Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP) which will say how agencies will work together to support a pupil. The CSP and PSP will both say what support will be given to a pupil and what educational outcomes can be expected.
