Sexual Health Education

My sincere apologies as this letter should have come to you much earlier. I have been on bereavement leave and only now catching up.

An important part of our Health Education and Personal and Social Development programmes is Sexual Health and Relationships Education.

National Guidelines on Sexual Health Education recommend that within the Primary sector, such lessons should be taught within a context, exploring physical, emotional and social themes.

Again this year, we plan to deliver lessons within this structure using a resource published by Positive Steps. This resource takes a holistic approach, with the lessons taking pupils through topics such as friendships and relationships, puberty and menstruation, decision making and self esteem and, for Primary 7 pupils, human reproduction.

An effective school and parent partnership will enhance and enrich any Sexual Health programme that is undertaken. I would therefore like to invite you to an information evening to be held in the school hall on Tuesday 24^th April, commencing at 6pm. I will outline the programme, and you will have the opportunity to discuss the activities and view the resources, which will be incorporated into the lessons. For those of you who have already attended, this session will be a repeat of that delivered last year. We hope to conclude the presentation by 7pm. Anyone unable to attend please feel free to give me a call or alternatively I could email you the Powerpoint Presentation that I will use tomorrow.

Good evening, I hope you all had a great weekend.  Homework and news as follows:

Homework

Spelling sounds this week are oi and oy as in soil and joy.  There will be a new spelling grid out into bookbags this week.  1 activity from the grid should be completed each week if possible.  This can replace or add to the sentence job normally completed on a Wednesday.

Reading books continue.

Maths homework will be looking at 1 hour before and 1 hour after times.

New wordwalls out on Monday.  These will be checked on Thursday 3rd May.

News

Big pedal starts on Monday 23rd April and will run for 2 weeks until Thursday 3rd May.  Children are encouraged to bring in a bike or scooter each day.  A helmet must be worn when riding bikes.  Bikes and scooters can be parked up the stairs near the railing at our classroom door.  This way we can see them and access them from the classroom easily.  We will be outside each day for Big pedal.  If your child does not bring a bike or scooter they will be encouraged to run, skip, jump etc during Big pedal time.

Topic

We started our new Africa topic on Friday.  We talked about what we already know about Africa and on Monday we will discuss what we would like to find out about in this topic.  We may also have a little visitor to our class this week………..

Reading Challenge

If your child has been taking part in the First Minister’s reading challenge, completed booklets should be returned by Friday 27th April.  If you have lost your passport or forgotten to fill it in, pop a note of the approximate amount of books your child has read since August and I will add it to the class total.  Thank you.

Homework and news for the week:

Spelling: This week we will be looking at the sounds ‘y’ as in fly, cry, dry and my. The class will also be handed out a spelling challenge grid.  One activity from the grid should be completed each week if possible.  This can replace or add to the sentence job normally completed on a Wednesday.

Reading: New books will be given out this week. Some children will be having their reading book for two weeks if on a certain colour band. These children should be discussing their books at home during their second week. Bookmarks with questions to discuss will be given out this week.

Maths: We will be focussing on halves in maths lessons this week. The children will be given a worksheet to complete at home, asking them to half numbers and some shading in. This is a link to a useful maths game and children can choose the ‘halves’ game:

News

Big Pedal: We will be outdoors everyday this week to take part in the Big Pedal. Helmets must be worn on bikes and it would be safer if children with scooters wore helmets too, however that is up to individual parents. Bikes will be stored in the area outside our classroom during the day.

Homework:

Spelling: This week our sounds are ‘oi’ as in noise, soil, boil and ‘oy’ as in toy, boy, employ. A spelling challenge grid will be issued tomorrow – this can be found in your child’s homework jotter.

Wordwalls:  Wordwalls will be issued tomorrow. These will be heard fortnightly. Children have been working very hard on their common words – if you are able, please ask your child to use them in a sentence.

Reading: New reading books will be issued this week.

The whole school will be taking part in the Big Pedal.  We would ask that children bring their bike or scooter to school each day. Helmets must be worn on bikes and it would be safer if children with scooters wore helmets too, however that is up to individual parents. Every class will have a cycling session every day in the playground. Pupils must dismount their bikes and scooters in the playground and be mindful in the ashy path and surrounding areas of the school grounds.

If you can, please join in as we will count the number of children with bikes and scooters and the number of supporters eg younger siblings, parents, grandparents or teachers who cycle to school. You can follow our progress on the Big Pedal website.

Spelling & Reading

This week our spelling rule is ‘igh’ as in sight, light, high, thigh etc.

All children have a new reading book this week and all children are now on higher book bands. Please continue to discuss your child’s reading book with them, asking what happened, what they liked/disliked, and so on. Some children may be asked to keep their book for two weeks due to the length of their text; I will write a note in the diaries of those this applies to.

No maths homework this week. 

Although the children may wish to play games online such as Sum Dog and Hit the Button.

We will start to focus more on our targets booklets. Please feel free to add targets with your child as these are their personal targets and they adapt or change them as they feel is best.

News

This week we will be starting our new topic all about Africa.  As you know one of our Primary 2 teachers Miss Cauley, will be visiting in the summer and we are so excited to learn about this continent before she goes.  The children will be involved in a discussion to determine what they would like to learn and what they already know.

Coming soon to Bishopton Primary – The Big Pedal is organised by the cycling charity Sustrans.  Every year they encourage children in schools all over the UK to cycle or scoot to school.  Parents and teachers are encouraged to join in too.  Every journey made is recorded over a 10 day period.  The school with the most journeys is the winner.  Prizes are awarded every day.

In Bishopton Primary, there is a special certificate for each daily class winner and an extra cycle/scooting time awarded to the over all winning class.

We ask that children cycle or scoot to school (but not in the playground before school or on the way home from school).

At some time every day, teachers will take their class to the playground to cycle or scoot and improve fitness , as well as having fun.

We would ask that all children wear a helmet on their bikes and , if they have one, on their scooters. Please make sure all helmets fit properly and are undamaged.

Please help us protect your child’s safety by checking over their bike or scooter before they bring it to school.

If your child has a lock for their bike or scooter they are welcome to use it, as bikes and scooters will be stored in the playground.  Children are responsible for looking after lock keys.
