The School Day
Primary classes: 9.00 a.m. start, and end at 3.15 p.m.
Lunchtime is from 12.15 p.m. to 1.15 p.m.
Primary 1 pupils attend school on a full-time basis from the first Monday in September.
Primary Curriculum
The Learner’s Journey
Within the primary department we offer a differentiated and individualised curriculum to meet the needs of all our pupils. Core areas of the curriculum are supported through nationally recognised programmes such as PM for reading and Scottish Heinemann Maths for maths and numeracy. There is a strong emphasis on Health and Wellbeing with the curriculum focusing on areas of particular importance to our pupils, such as personal and social development and life skills. We work closely with associated professionals to incorporate a specialist input in the areas of dental hygiene, medical issues and community awareness. Music and P.E. are also delivered by subject specialists. Children receive an equivalent of one hour per week of Religious and Moral Education, with Catholic pupils receiving an additional period of instruction. As part of Curriculum for Excellence the primary curriculum is developed through flexible timetabling to offer all pupils an element of personalisation and choice. In the lower primary this is offered through our active learning approaches and in the upper primary through option choices. The options allow pupils to develop strengths in areas of Health and Wellbeing, Technology and Expressive Arts.
Through our Interdisciplinary approach to learning and teaching pupils engage in holistic curricular experience within the following areas (Literacy and English, Maths and Numeracy, Modern Languages, Skills for Life and Work, Health and Wellbeing, Social Studies, Sciences, Technology, Expressive Arts, Religious and Moral Education) being focused around various themes. This contextualised approach makes learning more meaningful for our pupils. All topics are supported through fortnightly curricular outings during which pupils have the opportunity to develop skills in real life contexts. There are strong links with a variety of educational establishments, both locally and in the wider community.
